DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE COMING TO A STOP FROM 35 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND DID NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE'S FRONT PASSENGER SIDE COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN AT THE SCENE. THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES, ALTHOUGH THE SEATBELTS WERE WORN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTO BODY AND DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE BRAKE FAILURE.
FRONT BRAKES ARE CONTINUOUSLY WEARING BEFORE THEY SHOULD. FRONT BRAKE LINE COLLAPSED. FRONT LEFT BRAKE PADS REPLACED WITHIN A MONTH BECAUSE OF WEARING TOO QUICKLY. REPLACED BRAKES AND ROTOR. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE BACK PLATE FAILED ON THE REAR BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS IN NEUTRAL WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON AND THE BRAKE FAILED. UPON INSPECTION IT WAS DISCOVERED THE BACKER PLATE RUSTED OUT, RESULTING IN THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM WAS A COMBINATION OF BOTH DISC AND DRUM BRAKES. THERE WAS NO WARNING PRIOR TO THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE BACK PLATE. THE BACK PLATE HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED AT THIS TIME. EARLIER THERE WAS A FAILURE OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BRAKING SYSTEM. ALL FOUR BRAKE ROTORS RUSTED, RESULTING IN TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE. THE WHEEL CYLINDER SEPARATED FROM THE CALIPERS. THE ONLY WARNING LIGHT CAME AFTER THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE LEFT ROTOR. THE ROTORS WERE REPLACED AND THE CALIPERS WERE REBUILT. THE BRAKE PADS HAD LESS THAN 50 % WEAR BUT THEY WERE REPLACED AS WELL. *AK
MY 2000 CHEVY MALIBU WITH ONLY 80,000 MILES HAD A KNUCKLE IN THE FRONT BRAKE SHOWING NO WEAR AND TEAR VEERING ME OFF ROAD ,IM GOING TO KEEP THE PART AND TAKE PICTURES. IT DROVE SMOOTH SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THEN TODAY THE FRONT TIRE FOLDED UNDER. ME AND THE CERTIFIED MECHANIC COULDNT EXPLAIN IT. THE PART SHOWED NO SIGN OF WEAR TO THE AREA THAT BROKE. IVE BEEN LOOKING TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL, CANNOT FIND ONE IF THERE IS LET ME KNOW... THIS IS A VERY BIG DANGER AND IS LIFE THREATENING. AND IT WILL OBVIOUSLY HAPPEN WITHOUT A WARNING. I HAVE A 2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU WITH CHRONIC BRAKE PROBLEMS. IN THE 5 YEARS I'VE OWNED IT, I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKE SHOES AND SURFACE THE ROTORS EVERY YEAR (AND REPLACE ROTORS ONCE) BECAUSE OF A VIBRATION IN THE FRONT BRAKES. CHEVROLET REFUSES TO COVER THIS ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR UNDER WARRANTY AND REQUIRES THAT I PAY FOR THE REPAIR EVERY TIME.
2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU DEVELOPED PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES.*MR THE BRAKE HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED THREE TIMES, 24666, 37158 AND 49592 MILES. THE FIRST TIME THE MANUFACTURER FIXED THEM UNDER WARRANTY. THE OTHER TIMES THEY CLAIMED IT WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE LAST TIME THE BRAKES FAILED THE FRONT DISC PADS HAD WORN INTO THE ROTORS. *NM
THE BRAKE PULSATE AND GRIND. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR 2 YRS NOW. I HAVE HAD THE BRAKING SYSTEM COMPLETLY REPLACED. BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, CALIPERS, MASTER CYLINDER, BRAKE FUEL LINES, YOU NAME IT AND IT HAS BEEN DONE. I REPLACED THE BRAKES WITH GM PARTS. I NEED NEW BRAKES AGAIN. MY CAR COULD NOT STOP IN TIME TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT. IT IS AWFUL. WHEN THE CALIPERS WERE INSTALLED THEY MAKE CLICKING SOUNDS I WAS TOLD THIS WAS OK. ALSO, IF I APPLY THE BRAKES WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS IN THE ROAD THE ABS GOES OFF. *AK
I OWN A 2000 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN WHICH I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE FOR OVER A YEAR BECAUSE OF MALFUNCTIONING ANTILOCK BRAKES. I BROUGHT IT TO BE REPAIRED LAST YEAR AND PAID OVER $800 FOR ONE SET OF BRAKES, THE OTHER SET STILL NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THE ANTILOCK BRAKES PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM STOPPING WHEN TRAVELING AT SLOW SPEEDS. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY PROBLEM. THERE HAS BEEN A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE 2002. THERE IS CURRENTLY AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS VERY PROBLEM ON SIMILAR CHEVY SUVS AND TRUCKS, BUT NOT INCLUDING THE ASTRO VAN.
WHENEVER THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WOULD SHIMMY. WOULD LET BRAKES GO WHEN VEHICLE STARTED TO SHIMMY. THIS OCCURRED AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. IT WAS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. HAD TAKEN VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP, AND HAD THE ROTORS TURNED AND BRAKES REPLACED. THE ROTORS WOULD BE TURNED EVERY 6,000 TO 10,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM HAD NOT BEEN RESOLVED.*AK

I PURCHASED A USED 2000 CHEVY MALIBU WITH 18,000 MILE IN MARCH OF 2002. THE CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP A WEEK LATER DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES/ROTORS AND THE BRAKES/ROTORS WERE REPLACED. I CONTINUE TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES AND ROTORS. IN THE 2 YEARS I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR, I HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKES AND ROTORS 2 TIMES AND REPLACED THE BRAKES 3 TIMES. THIS IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. MY CAR ONLY HAS 54,000 MILES. I CONTACTED THE CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS A WEAR ISSUE AND NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. I FEEL A RECALL IS WARRANTED AS THIS IS OBVIOULSY A DEFECT WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL.*AK

THE DEALER REPLACED THE FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS AT 29,000 MILES, NOW 5,000 MILES LATER AT 34,000 MILES THE BRAKE PADS HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THE ROTORS RESURFACED AGAIN. I FEEL THE PARTS BEING USED ARE DEFECTIVE. I ALSO FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I LOOKED AT THE COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE SAME YEAR MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE I HAVE WHICH IS A 2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE BRAKES. ISN'T IT TIME SOME ONE DID SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SO MANY CONSUMERS ARE HAVING?*AK
I BELIEVE THERE IS AN ENGINEERING DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE BRAKES THAT CAUSES PREMATURE WEAR OF THE ROTORS, WHICH COULD LEAD TO BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE. THIS PROBLEM IS WELL DOCUMENTED BY CUSTOMERS, SERVICE FACILITIES AND GM DEALERS. GM GOES OUT OF ITS WAY TO DISCOURAGE RELEVANT DISCUSSION OF THIS PROBLEM, CHOOSING INSTEAD TO IGNORE IT. IN THREE YEARS, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY ROTORS 5 TIMES WITH 87,000 MILES ON THE CAR. IT IS EXPENSIVE AND HIGHLY UNUSUAL FOR ROTORS TO WEAR OUT SO QUICKLY. EVERY MECHANIC/TECHNICIAN I HAVE SPOKEN WITH SAYS THE EXACT SAME THING: THE ROTORS ARE ENGINEERED EXTREMELY THIN DUE TO THE CALIPER DESIGN. IN ORDER TO FIT THE ROTOR IN PLACE - IT MUST BE SO THIN DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM THAT TO BEGIN WITH IT IS BARELY WITHIN SAFETY SPECIFICATIONS. IF NOT EXTREMELY VIGILIANT, ROTORS CAN WARP QUICKLY - CAUSING A CASCADING EFFECT THAT IS ALSO WELL DOCUMENTED. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THIS SITUATION NEEDS CAREFUL SCRUTINY. GM NEEDS TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND DEVELOP A REMEDY FOR THIS SITUATION. *AK
THE BACK BRAKES LOCKED UP AT 55 MPH, WHICH MADE ME LOSE CONTROL AND SLAM INTO A TREE PRETTY HARD. THE ROAD CONDITION WAS PAVED AND DRY. LEGAL PROCEEDINGS WILL OCCUR IF CHEVROLET DOESN'T RESOLVE THIS MATTER! *LA
MY 2000 CHEVROLET MALIBU HAS ONLY 77,749 MILES ON IT. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND PURCHASED THE CAR NEW. SINCE THE PURCHASE I HAVE REPLACED ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS 4 TIMES. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ABSURD. THERE MUST BE SOME KIND OF A DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE FOR A PERSON TO HAVE TO REPLACE ROTORS AND PADS 4 TIMES WITHIN THE AMOUNT OF MILEAGE I HAVE PLACED ON MY CAR. I WAS INVOLVED IN AN MVA BACK IN 2002 BECAUSE OF TURN SIGNAL FAILURE. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT A RECALL HAD BEEN MADE BUT NOBODY EVER NOTIFIED ME! ALSO MY WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES ESPECIALLY WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES. I HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO LOOSING CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE ON TWO OCCASIONS WHEN THERE IS WATER ON THE ROADS. I REPLACED MY ROTORS TWICE! I BELEIVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT.AND ONE MORE THING MY AC CONTROL SWITCH KEEPS TURNING ON AND OFF THE COMPRESSOR I DONT BELIEVE THIS COULD BE GOOD FOR THE COMPRESSOR!. *AK
