Please Note: I filed a previous complaint (#11511950) on 03/15/2023. Please refer to Ford Technical Service Bulletin TSB 22-2229 issued in June 2022 regarding coolant intrusion into cylinder head on 2017 - 2020 Ford Ecoboost 2.0L engines. Due to a faulty design all of these engines are all destined for total failure. In their own technical service bulletin Ford describes the appropriate fix as total engine replacement. Because of what should surely be considered Ford's manufacturing defect, coolant inevitably intrudes into the cylinder head(s) mixing coolant with the fuel. Once this has begun it is only a matter of time before the engine fails. If such a total engine failure (hydrolock) occurrs at speed the results could be catastrophic, leading to deaths and injuries. Under these circumstances it is difficult to understand why there has not been a recal on these faulty engines. Further, Ford has already offered owners of Ford vehicles with the Ecoboost 1.5L engines, subject to the same problem for the same reason, total engine replacement regardless of mileage.
My 2.0L EcoBoost engine is having the coolant intrusion into the cylinder issue that Ford has acknowledge in a technical service bulletin, but is not doing anything about it. There is a design flaw with this engine and Ford has redesigned in in later years, but has not issued a recall. The coolant reservoir is getting low and there are no signs of leak under the vehicle as it is leaking into the cylinder. I was getting DTCs for cylinder 2 misfire and my car would shake on startup some times. I changed the spark plugs and ignition packs at 100k and noticed that the cylinder 2 spark plugged looked more brown/burnt (it was burning coolant in the cylinder) than he other 3. The coolant has been low (below the min mark) and I have topped it off 3 times already as the issue keeps reoccurring. Coolant in the cylinder is an issue and low coolant could cause the engine to overheat and blow at any point and could be a catastrophic accident waiting to happen. I spoke about the symptoms over the phone to the service guy at my local Ford dealer and he was already familiar with this issue and confident that I have it based on our conversation. I have plans to take it to my mechanic to have them inspect it as well as the dealer.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the engine block. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
I was driving on interstate route 22 in Derry Twp. Pa. when the engine started to shake and the vehicle started to slow down , I know that there was a ford garage 2 mile down the road , and I managed to get the vehicle to the Ford garage. Upon inspection by the Ford service garage they informed me that there is coolant getting into the #2 cylinder of the 4 cylinder engine . They also informed me that it cannot be fixed and that the entire engine needs to be replaced . There is only 61,166 miles on the engine and Ford says that it is out of warranty and the owner is responsible for all repairs which comes to $7,121.01 . I have spoken to 3 Ford garages , TRI-STAR MOTERS , Blairsville, Pa. were my vehicle is , LATROBE FORD , and Greensburg FORD, and all three told me that they have seen this problem in there shop on the 4 cylinder Ford engines ! The service depts. stated that there is a defect in the engine blocks and that is why it has to be replaced vs repaired ! They said that Ford had a recall on some of the engines but not all. All these 4 cylinders Ford engines need to be recalled not just some of them ! It is obvious, just as in my case that most of these 4 cylinders are defective ! The engine warning light did not come on until I had almost complete engine failure and slowed down considerably . I am requesting the NTSB and the NHTSA to further expand the recall on these obviously defective engines. The vehicle owners should NOT be stuck paying over $7,000 for an obvious defect that Ford knows about and needs to take responsibility for ! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE !!!
There is a problem with coolant leaking into the cylinders on the 2.0L Ecoboost engines on the Ford edge requiring the entore engine to be replaced. Now mine is under warranty but I have researched and there are many many people having the same issue. I think it's time ford issues a recall since it's a manufacturer defect
Engine light came on, code it was showing was P0302. Took it to the mechanic the next morning. The shop said there is coolant leaking into the engine and the only repair to be had is to get an entire new engine. We purchased the edge used with about 72,000 miles within the last month. Upon further research, it seems that coolant leaking into the edge in the 2015-2018 models is very common, yet there is no recall for our VIN and no direct suppose from Ford if outside the manufacture warranty.
In July 2023, I had to refill my anti freeze just one week after service. My dash lit up regarding the problem. Today, October 2023, same situation. Both situations required about 36 oz of antifreeze. In checking online I noticed this reference number indicating numerous problems like this in 2016-2018 Ford Edge. [XXX] In contacting Ron at Ford Motor Co ([XXX] ), he stated that Ford has no recall for this situation. He referred me to you. Any info on what I can do. My name is [XXX] my husband and I have been working with Chapman Ford on a situation with my 2018 Ford Edge. Currently the Edge needs an Engine replacement according to TSB #'s 19-2208,19-2346,22-2133 and 22-2229. This stems from a design flaw issue starting with the 2015 Edge according to the TSB's. The cost to replace the engine is $7030.95, Chapman Ford put in a GCCT Case and got approval for $2,812.38 of the total cost for a known design flaw that should probably have been a recall or at the very least extended the warranty to 150K like Ford has done on other engines with the same issue, but not my model. Ford is telling me I need to pay $4,200 out of pocket to replace the entire engine. I only have 70,000 miles on the vehicle. I feel like I'm getting the run around when it comes to Ford. We have called the company directly and they told us since Ford Chapman made the offer to reduce the cost by $2,800.00, they cannot extend further coverage for the cost. I'm confused here, why am I paying for a design flaw? Why was there not a recall? Can you help? What really upsets me is Ford never notified me of this problem, it was not disclosed when I purchased the vehicle, nor did they diagnose it when my engine light came on. A third party was the one to alert us to the issue and the bulletin. [XXX] [XXX] . [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact's wife owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had persisted. The contact stated that there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe while starting the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the coolant temperature warning light illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to pull to the side of the road. The contact stated that the failure occurred on several occasions. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart and would respond as needed after cooling off for approximately 20 minutes. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed, and the mechanic determined that cylinder #3 was misfiring due to coolant intrusion. The mechanic related the failure to TSB Number: 19-2208. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer on three separate occasions; however, the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure. The failure persisted and the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start up after refueling. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred her to another dealer; the Hammonasset Ford (191 Boston Post Rd, Madison, CT 06443) where the mechanic determined that coolant had leaked into multiple engine cylinders, leading to engine failure. The vehicle remained in dealer possession and was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
We have 64,000 miles on this car. A p0303 code came on and took vehicle to ford. Mechanic said we need a new engine and quoted us $7,584. We were told that we're 4,000 over our warranty and the dealership and ford will not pay a cent toward repair. This is a well known issue with the 2.0 turbo engine. There are numerous accounts of this engine failing and still ford turns a blind eye. There is a t.s.b. #22-2229 and ford will not fix this. This needs to be addressed with ford and they need to pay for their failure. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated the heating unit was blowing but failed to get warm. While driving and using the A/C unit, the vehicle would warm up. The defroster was inoperable. The check engine warning light was flashing on and off. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that coolant was entering the engine. The manufacturer was notified but no additional assistance was provided and referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.
TSB 22-2229 Had dealer change spark plugs, while attempting broke spark plug off in head. Reported they would have to replace the head. More investigation led them to TSB 22-2229 and a boroscope of the head found coolant intrusion. Now the dealer states it will cost me 6500$ to repair the long block due to the coolant intrusion. This is a known problem with 2014-2018 Ford Edge and Ford Escapes as well as other vehicles. Copied from a law group website who is filing a class action lawsuite "Experts recommend that customers notify the Ford motor company as soon as possible once they identify an issue. These problems are not always simple and could cause dangerous consequences. If the leak inside it is left unfixed, it could cause problems with the engine and cause a rear-drive axle seizure." A quick search of this has hundreds of complaints stating this issue. This is not just a rear drive axle seizure issue. This could cause a fire in the engine due to coolant in the combustion. The check engine code did display with a P0300 MISFIRE Cylinder 3 code on it.

Head Gasket/Coolant Intrustion. Also had flexplate crack and sounded like a Diesel engine. All between 86000 and 91000
My 2018 Ford Edge has 85k miles. Recently it began vibrating on startup even after the auto-shut off button was activated. The rough idle began interfering with my ability to maintain adequate attention on the road and created significant feelings of anxiety each at every braking. Vehicle check engine light would come on and then go off. On 8/26/22 vehicle was inspected by Beach Ford who completed a fuel injector treatment. After picking up vehicle the check engine light reappeared. Attempted to contact service agent by cell phone because dealership stated that was the only way to communicate but did not receive reply. Changed all spark plugs and coils due to code P0303. Check engine light still on so contacted Beach Ford again and on 9/9/22 they confirmed the issue as a coolant leak appearing on the “bulletin” as a commonly known defect for my vehicle. The dealership stated I would need a new engine and since the warranty only covers up to 60k miles I would have to pay the full price of over $7500. Any symptoms of a problem were immediately addressed by dealership within one week of onset each time. Dealership completed work on a recall 6/10/22 and mentioned nothing about the “known service defect” nor did they document completing any routine inspections out of courtesy since Ford had this information at that time and I (the unknowing consumer) did not.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the engine would rough idle and misfire with the check engine warning light remaining illuminated. Additionally, white smoke was present coming from the tail pipe. The contact stated that it was discovered that the coolant level was very low. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the coolant had leaked into cylinder #3, causing damage to the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 115,000.
Coolant leaking into the engine which cracked the engine, need a new engine
My car needs a new engine. I got an oil change in March and everything was fine with the engine. Then in June a cloud of smoke came out of my tail pipe when I started the car, but since at this time the car had been sitting I thought this was the cause. A couple days later my check engine light came on and an indicator stating my coolant was hot when i was accelerating getting on the fwy. I checked the coolant and it below the minimum which was odd since i had gotten an oil change and topped off my fluids only a couple months before. I added coolant and the indicator and check engine light went off. My check engine light, another billow of smoke and my car stating my coolant was overheating happened again early July and I tool my vehicle in on July 18th to get looked at. It was inspected by a technician and was informed that it needed a new engine because the coolant leaked into the engine. It was inspected again by portfolio ins co and because I can’t find a receipt they will not fix it until I can. And Ford even though this is a common issue on my year make and model they will only cover it until 60,000 miles. I bought my car with 38,000 miles on it. It has been a month already and my car is still just sitting at the Ford dealership.
Check Engine light came on in June of 2022 and the code was for a cylinder one misfire. Took the vehicle to dealership where they confirmed it is a known issue amongst this make, model, and year. They determined coolant was leaking into the engine and the only repair was replacement of the engine. They told us there was a bulletin issued by Ford for the problem but no recall. The engine had to have coolant replaced several times over a short period of time. The leak caused burn off of the coolant that in turn changes exhaust. The engine can overheat and cause larger damage because there is no indicator to alert or warn of low coolant. The issue poses an environmental and safety risk as the vehicle can shut off at random and reach temperatures that can cause a fire.
There is a crack in the engine block that is pulling coolant into the engine causing total engine failure. In addition there are carbon deposits in the coolant which means the exhaust is being pulled into the coolant/engine system. The first indicator of a problem was at 80k miles with rough idle and hesitation on acceleration. 2 engine check lights lead to replacing 'bad coils' and spark plugs. Then the car started to overheat and ran out of coolant. We replaced to coolant and it ran out again 3 weeks later. With no evidence of a coolant leak we knew there was a major problem and online research showed likely total engine failure. This has been confirmed by the dealer and requires a whole new engine long block ($9000 repair). Driving a car with a cracked engine block is dangerous to myself and others on the road. Luckily I figured out the problem myself before something happened while driving.
