The contact owns a 2009 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while his son was driving at approximately 25 MPH, the steering wheel detached. The driver was able to reattach the steering wheel and safely pull over. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, who referred him to an independent mechanic for assistance. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who replaced the standard clockspring in the steering wheel, part number CSP200. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed that the vehicle was too old, and no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD F-150. WHILE REVERSING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND TURNING TO THE LEFT, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO NORTH BROTHERS FORD, INC. (33300 FORD RD, WESTLAND, MI 48185, (734) 421-1300) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 34,790.
I AM THE PROUD OWNER OF A 2009 FORD F150 WITH JUST OVER 42K MILES. THE STEERING HAS INCREASINGLY BECOME MORE-AND-MORE DIFFICULT OVER THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS. MY TRUCK HAS BEEN FOR THE MOST PART- PAMPERED. I DO PULL A SMALL UTILITY TRAILER AND THE TRUCK IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER. I FIRST NOTICED THE ISSUE LAST MARCH (2016) AFTER SITTING FOR 6-WEEKS AND THE STEERING DIFFICULTY HAS BECOME MORE PRONOUNCED. THE POWER-STEERING FLUID IS AT THE PROPER LEVEL, THERE ARE NO LEAKS AND TIRE PRESSURE IS NORMAL. YET THE TRUCK STEER'S AND HANDLES AS THOUGH I HAVE LOW/NO AIR IN THE FRONT TIRES AND/OR THE POWER STEERING PUMP IS FAILING. I PLAN ON TAKING THE TRUCK INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR A COMPLETE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. MY OVERALL CONCERN IS TO COMMUNICATE THE IMPORTANCE THAT STEERING AND HANDLING IS VITAL TO THE "SAFE-OPERATION" OF A MOTOR VEHICLE ESPECIALLY A TRUCK. I PREVIOUSLY OWNED A 1999 F150 AND EVEN WITH OVER 100K MILES, STEERING WAS NEVER AN ISSUE. IN FACT, I HAVE OWNED AND OPERATED MANY VEHICLES WITH OVER 100K MILES BOTH IN THE MILITARY AND IN CIVILIAN USE AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED "STEERING" ISSUES OF THIS NATURE. I AM THEREFORE CONCERNED AS TO THE NATURE OF THIS SPECIFIC FAILURE ON A VEHICLE THAT HAS NOT SEEN HEAVY DUTY USE OR BEEN DRIVEN EXCESSIVELY. THE STEERING WHEEL ATTACHMENT BOLT WORKED ITS WAY LOOSE AND THE WHEEL FELL OFF WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN I ADJUSTED THE STEERING WHEEL L. IT POPPED OFF ITS SETTING AND FELL ON MY LAP. MAKING STEERING IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO ALIGN THE WHEEL AND SHOVEBIT BACK IN PLACE UNTIL I COULD GET VEHICLE STOPPED. THE ONLY THING THAT SAVED AN SERIOUS ACCIDENT WAS THE GOOD ALIGNMENT OF MY TIRES AND LUCKILY I GOT THE WHEEL LINED UP AND ON WITHIN A SECOND.
TL* THE CONTAC OWNS A 2009 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE RACK AND PINION MALFUNCTIONED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000.
ON OR ABOUT MARCH 23, 2015 STEERING BECAME STIFF. STIFFNESS INCREASED TO THE POINT ON APRIL 1, 2015 THAT IT STARTED TO BIND UPON MAKING RIGHT HAND TURNS. DEALER REPLACED LOWER STEERING SHAFT ON APRIL 3, 2015 AND THE STEERING HAS RETURNED TO NORMAL. I HAVE OWNED 17 DIFFERENT VEHICLES IN MY LIFETIME AND I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH BINDING STEERING. IF THE STEERING HAD BOUND UP COMPLETELY I COULD HAVE HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. FORD MOTOR SHOULD INITIATE A RECALL FOR THIS DEFECT. *TR
HIGH PRESSURE POWER STEERING HOSE LEAK. *TR
TRUCK STEERING "WENT OUT" AND THE POWER STEERING WORKED ON AND OFF. FOUND OUT IS WAS LOWER STEERING SHAFT, I HAD JUST REPLACED A POWER STEERING HOSE, THE PROBLEM WAS NOT SOLVED. ANYWAY THE NEW LOWER STEERING SHAFT DID SOLVE THE PROBLEM (COST OF OVER $320.00 TO ME) BUT REALLY AT LESS THAN 70,000 MILES, AND A VERY CONSERVATIVE ONE MAN DRIVER A FAMILY TRUCK NOT BUSINESS TRUCK, NOT ROUGH! THE TRUCK IS PARKED OUTSIDE AND I DID NOTICE RECALLS FURTHER NORTH DUE TO COLD AND ROUGH WINTERS. I LIVE IN SE MICHIGAN AND PERHAPS THAT RECALL SHOULD HEAD SOUTH A BIT. TOTAL SPENDING WAS OVER 650.00 DOLLARS FOR BOTH JOBS. AN F150 WITH BIG STEERING PROBLEMS AND BIG COST WITH LESS THEN 70,000, NOT ANYONE'S IDEA OF "BUILT TOUGH". I HAVE BEEN BEHIND THE WHEEL OF MANY VEHICLES AND TRAVELED WELL OVER A MILLION MILES IN OVER 50 YEARS OF DRIVING AND I NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THESE PARTS. COOL MORNING TRUCK WAS FINE DAY BEFORE, BUT THIS AM STEERING WAS "HARD" LIKE TRUCK LOST IT'S "POWER" IN POWER STEERING. THE POWER STEERING LEVEL WAS ABOUT 1/4 INCH BELOW MIN SO I FILLED TO PROPER LEVEL. ( I JUST HAD IT AT DEALER AND FLUID WAS CHECKED "OK" TWO MONTHS PRIOR). A FEW DAYS LATER LEVEL HAD GONE DOWN A BIT SO I ADDED MORE STAYING BETWEEN MIN AND MAX LINES. NEXT COUPLE WEEKS POWER STEERING WOULD FADE IN AND OUT (AT ALL SPEEDS) AND WORKED WHENEVER IT WANTED TO. INTERMITTENT HARD TO TURN AND AT TIMES WORKED FINE. TOOK TO DEALER ON 4 30 14 (THIS DAY STEERING WAS WORKING FINE) AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A LEAKING POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE OPERATION 3719-A R&R 4.6L 2009. COST OUT OF POCKET ABOUT 390.44. I AM THE ONLY DRIVER OF THIS TRUCK AND I DRIVE LIKE AN OLD MAN CAUSE I AM AN OLDER MAN, LOTS OF TLC. SO WHY IN THE HECK WOULD THIS FAIL SO EARLY AT LESS THEN 70,000 MILES? RECALL NEEDED?? *JS
STEERING SHAFT AFTER ONLY 48,000 MILES OF ON ROAD DRIVING WAS WORN OUT TO THE EXTENT THAT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN ONE LANE AND TO NEGOTIATE TURNS WITH ANY DEGREE OC CONFIDENCE . A SEARCH OF FORD FORUMS INDICATE NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS OF THIS SAME TYPE OF ISSUE AS WELL AS BINDING IN THE STEERING COLUMN LIKELY DUE TO FAILURE OF THIS SAME PART. *TR
SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHILE BACKING. COULD BE VERY DANGEROUSE IN A PARKING LOT OR AREA WHERE OTHER VEHICLES OR PEOPLE ARE PRESENT. *TR
POWER STEERING HOSE IS LEAKING FLUID. MULTIPLE DEALERS HAVE STATED THAT THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER AND FULFILLMENT OF A REPLACEMENT ORDER WILL TAKE ANYWHERE FROM SEVERAL WEEKS TO ALMOST A YEAR BASED ON PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES THEY'VE HAD. THEY ALSO STATED THAT FORD ORDERED DEALERS TO STOP SELLING ANY HOSES THEY CURRENTLY HAVE IN INVENTORY. DEALERS HAVE ALL STATED THAT I SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON FLUID LEVEL, KEEP DRIVING IT, AND HOPE IT DOESN'T GET WORSE OR FAIL COMPLETELY. *TR
WAS INFORMED BY DEALER AT 36,000 INSPECTION AND OIL CHANGE THAT POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE HAD A LEAK AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. VEHICLE 3 YRS OLD, LIGHTLY DRIVEN. *TR
TOOK MY VEHICLE FOR IN FOR ANNUAL SAFETY INSPECTION. FAILED DUE TO LEAKING LOWER POWER STEERING HOSE. UNABLE TO OBTAIN REPLACEMENT FROM FORD DUE TO BACKORDER - APPARENTLY THIS IS A VERY COMMON FAILURE FOR THIS PART IN THESE VEHICLES. FORD STATED THAT THEY WON'T HAVE ANY AVAILABLE UNTIL 22 OCT SO I'M DRIVING AROUND WITH A FAILED VEHICLE SAFETY STICKER UNTIL THEN. AMAZED THAT THIS OCCURRED ON A VEHICLE THAT'S ONLY 3 YEARS OLD, AND SUBJECTED TO LIGHT DUTY THE ENTIRE TIME. VEHICLE NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY SO WILL COST ME $600 TO REPLACE (NEW HOSE IS $200 ALONE!). THIS IS MY 5TH AND LAST FORD. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WAS CHANGING THE OIL AND NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING LINE WAS LEAKING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC FOR AN INSPECTION AND THEY INFORMED HIM THAT THEY COULD NOT OBTAIN THE NECESSARY PART BECAUSE IT WAS ON BACK ORDER. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS AGAIN INFORMED THAT THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE KNOWN ISSUES FOR THIS FAILURE, BUT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
POWER STEERING HYDRAULIC HOSE LEAKING, CAUSING POWER STEERING PUMP TO WHINE & CAVITATE,& WILL EVENTUALLY RUIN THE POWER STEERING PUMP, DEALER SAYS THE HOSE IS ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER, 3700 CUSTOMERS ARE WAITING FOR THIS PART. DRIVE AT YOUR OWN RISK, WHEN THE PUMP FAILS YOU GO TO MANUAL STEERING INSTANTLY AND COULD LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
POWER STEERING HOSE LEAKING FLUID. MECHANIC TRIED ORDERING REPLACEMENT AND WAS TOLD BY FORD THERE IS A NATIONAL BACK-ORDER OF 4500 UNITS. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD F150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME EXTREMELY SLUGGISH AND DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REACH HIS DESTINATION AND NOTICED THAT THE LOWER POWER STEERING HOSE WAS LEAKING FLUID. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOTIFIED, THEY BOTH INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE PART WAS ON A NATIONAL BACK ORDER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS UNCERTAIN WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT HAD BEEN WAITING ON THE PART SINCE MARCH OF 2012. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE FOR THE POWER STEERING HAD A BAD FITTING ON HIS VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT YET EXPERIENCED A FAILURE, BUT THE CONTACT WAS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 85,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
DURING AN INSPECTION THE POWER STEERING HOSE WAS FOUND TO BE LEAKING. ADVISED BY SERVICE AGENT TO TAKE TO DEALER AS A WARRANTY ISSUE. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID NEW POWER STEERING HOSE IS REQUIRED AND SENT ON MY WAY AFTER BEING TOLD HOSE IS ORDERED. MORE THAN A WEEK LATER I FIND OUT, AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WAITING 10 WEEKS FOR THE SAME REPLACEMENT PART FROM FORD, THE ONLY SUPPLIER OF THIS PARTICULAR HOSE! I CONTACTED FORD BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP DOES NOT RESPOND TO PHONE CALLS AND WAS TOLD THAT THE DEALER SAYS THAT IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE. WELL I FEEL THAT ANY LEAKING POWER STEERING HOSE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE RESPONSE FROM FORD WAS TO PURCHASE A LARGE CONTAINER OF POWER STEERING FLUID AND CONTINUALLY TOP UP THE FLUID. THEY SAID THIS ADVICE WAS FROM THE DEALER. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE REPORTED SIMPLY BECAUSE THE MORE YOU DRIVE THE HIGHER THE RISK OF A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE STEERING AND THE RISK OF DEATH OR INJURY TO THE DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS. IT ALSO NEEDS TO BE HIGHLIGHTED THE BLASE ATTITUDE OF FORD AND THEIR DEALERS TO THIS MATTER. IT WAS CERTAINLY OF BIG ENOUGH CONCERN INITIALLY FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO TRY AND FIND A RENTAL VEHICLE THAT THEY WOULD PAY FOR IN LIEU OF LOSS OF TRANSPORT AS WAS CONCERNED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE FOR LONG DISTANCES. *TR
WHILE NEGOTIATING A RIGHT TURN ON A BUSY INTERSECTION, I HEARD A COUPLE OF POPPING SOUND FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. AFTER THAT, I LOST POWER STEERING ON RIGHT TURN AND ALMOST RAN HEAD ON IN AN ONCOMING VEHICLE FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO A CRAWL BECAUSE I HAVE TO HANG ON TO THE STEERING WHEEL TO NEGOTIATE THE TURN. THE OTHER DRIVER HAS TO STOP TO LET ME GET BACK TO MY LANE. EVERYTIME I NEGOTIATE A CURVE ON HWY 160 FROM PAGOSA SPRINGS TO COLORADO SPRINGS, I HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO ABOUT 45 MPH TO NEGOTIATE THE CURVE. IT FELT LIKE I'M WORKING AGAINST HYDRAULIC PRESSURE EVERYTIME I STEER TO THE RIGHT. LEFT STEER IS A BIT HARD BUT NOT AS HARD AND ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER TO THE RIGHT. THE WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT THE POWER STEERING GEAR BOX WAS DEFECTIVE. THIS INCIDENT OF LOOSING STEERING ON A BUSY CITY STREET COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD F150. WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN OVER 70 MPH THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BEGAN VIBRATING. THE DEALER TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,280.
