2007 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID VERY UNSTABLE ON ICY ROAD CONDITIONS ESPECIALLY AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN CYCLING BETWEEN ELECTRIC MOTOR, GAS ENGINE AND COMPLETELY SHUTTING OFF. IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC IF I DID NOT PUT THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL THE CAR WOULD LURCH AND LOSE TRACTION WHEN CYCLING THROUGH DRIVE SYSTEMS. AS A SIDE BAR I HAD 4 NEW TIRES INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE ON JANUARY 14, 2009. 12 DAY PRIOR TO THE ICY ROAD CONDITIONS. HONDA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. *TR

THIRD GEAR ON MY '07 HONDA CIVIC SI COUPE IS BOTH FREQUENTLY IMPOSSIBLE TO ENGAGE (EVERY THIRD OR FOURTH SHIFT CHANGE) AND POPS OUT OF GEAR DURING DRIVING (TYPICALLY 2-3 TIMES AN HOUR DURING CONTINUOUS DRIVING). THIS POSES POTENTIAL DANGERS WHILE DRIVING AS THERE IS FAILURE IN THE APPLICATION OF POWER TO THE DRIVEN WHEELS, WHICH IS ESSENTIAL FOR CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE. THE ISSUE IS KNOWN TO BE COMMON IN THE 6 SPEED SI TRANSMISSION. HONDA DENIES THE ISSUE, STATING THAT THE ENGAGEMENT PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY NOT FULLY DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH. I ALWAYS FULLY DEPRESS THE CLUTCH WHEN SHIFTING, HAVE DRIVEN MANUALLY TRANSMISSION VEHICLES FOR 41 YEARS, AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH ANY VEHICLE, LET ALONE A GEARSHIFT WHICH POPS OUT OF GEAR DURING NORMAL DRIVING). THE FAILURE TO ENGAGE IS PROBABLY MORE AN ANNOYANCE THAN AN ISSUE, HOWEVER THE POPPING OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING IS A SERIOUS ROAD HAZARD AND RISK; FOR EXAMPLE, IF ONE IS CORNERING ON SNOW COVERED OR WET PAVEMENT, THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER TO THE DRIVEN WHEELS COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO VEER OFF COURSE AND RESULT IN A CRASH. THE UNFORTUNATE DRIVER WHO DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZE THE LOSS OF POWER TRANSMISSION, OR WHAT TO DO TO RECOVER, IS CERTAINLY PLACED IN A HIGHLY COMPROMISED POSITION, TO SAY THE LEAST, AND AT WORST MAY FIND HIM OR HERSELF IN A VEHICLE WHICH IS TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA CIVIC. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN NOVEMBER 2007. A FEW MONTHS LATER, HE WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT INTO THIRD GEAR WITHOUT IT MAKING A LOUD NOISE. THE FAILURE WAS PROGRESSIVE AT TIMES AND INTERMITTENTLY HE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AT SHIFTING INTO THIRD GEAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IF THE ROTOR FAILED IT COULD CAUSE A CRASH. A COMPLAINT WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER AFTER THREE ATTEMPTS TO NOTIFY THEM OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY HAVEN'T RECEIVED COMPLAINTS RELATED TO THE FAILURE AND IT IS NOT A SAFETY CONCERN. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 14,800.

I BOUGHT MY 2007 HONDA CIVIC SI ON 12/29/07 WITH APPROXIMATELY 2,200 MILES ON IT. FROM DAY ONE THIRD GEAR WOULD GRIND ON OCCASION. ON 4/2/08 AFTER HAVING THE CAR 90 DAYS I NOTICED THE CLUTCH SLIPPING. THE VERY NEXT DAY I LEFT HOME TO GO TO THE HONDA DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND DIDN'T MAKE IT THERE. MY CLUTCH BURNT OUT. HONDA HAS TORN DOWN THE TRANSMISSION AND BLAMED ME FOR "MISUSE". HONDA AMERICA HAS DECLINED ANY HELP TOWARDS PAYMENT. THEY WANT $1,400 FOR A NEW CLUTCH. I WAS SHIFTING EASILY FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR AT 15-18MPH AND APPROXIMATELY 3K RPM. MY MANUAL TRANSMISSION FAILED AT THAT TIME, AND I LOST POWER-- NEARLY CREATING AN ACCIDENT. THE FAILURE INVOLVED BROKEN TEETH OF THE COUNTERSHAFT AND FINAL (RING) GEAR. THIS TYPE OF FAILURE HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED PREVIOUSLY IN MANY INTERNET FORUMS, BUT PERHAPS NOT FORMALLY. HONDA SHOULD HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT MODELS EXPERIENCING SUCH FAILURE, REPRESENTED BY THE NUMBER OF TRANSMISSIONS / COUNTERSHAFT / FINAL DRIVE GEARS SOLD BY THEIR PARTS DISTRIBUTOR. I HAVE A 2007 CIVIC SI WITH ONLY 12,000 MILES ON IT. ISSUE: 3RD GEAR HARD TO ENGAGE. IT IS AN INTERMITTENT SAFETY PROBLEM. I OWN A 2007 HONDA CIVIC SI (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) AND 1 OUT OF EVERY 5 TIMES I SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR IT GRINDS AND DOES NOT ENGAGE PROPERLY. IN 4000 MILES IT HAS ALSO FALLEN OUT OF GEAR TWICE UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY SLOW AND I WILL BE DISTRACTED WHILE DRIVING AS IT IS QUITE UNEXPECTED ON A CAR WITH 10,000 MILES. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR TO HONDA AND THEY SAID THIS WAS DUE TO EXCESSIVE CLUTCH WEAR CAUSED BY "DRIVING THE CAR TOO HARD". THE RPM'S RACED TO AN EXCESSIVELY HIGH RATE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER EACH TIME. THE FAILURE STILL PERSISTS AND THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED OF THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,900 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,000.

PROBLEM: UNABLE TO SHIFT FROM PARK INTO DRIVE - CIVIC HYBRID 2007 RESEARCH SHOWS PROBLEM WAS KNOWN AND POSTED IN SEPTEMBER 2007 PURCHASED CAR NEW IN JANUARY 2008 W DEFECT AND WAS NOT INFORMED. THIS DEFECT WAS MODIFIED AND POSTED AGAIN AS A KNOWN ISSUE ON 3/18/08 BROUGHT CAR IN FOR SERVICE (OIL CHANGE) IN APRIL 2007. NO MENTION OF RECALL AND SINCE CAR WAS PURCHASED AFTER KNOWN PROBLEM, IT DID NOT OCCUR THAT THE CAR WOULD BE SOLD W/O ISSUE BEING FIXED. JUNE 8, 2008 - CAR LOCKS IN PARK SEVERAL TIMES. BREAK LIGHT COMES ON. I CHECK MANUAL THAT SAYS TO NOT DRIVE/HAVE CAR TOWED. I DRIVE DIRECTLY TO THE SAFEST LOCATION TO PARK AND CALL FOR A TOW TRUCK. I HAVE MISSED A SCHEDULED SEMINAR/DAY OF WORK. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THIS RECALL DURING PURCHASE AND SERVICE. SINCE THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE, WHY WAS THIS NOT FIXED PRIOR TO SALE? WHY WAS I NOT NOTIFIED? WHY WAS THIS NOT CAUGHT AT MY SERVICE? THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 6/8/08 - WAS CALLED ON 6/9/08 AND TOLD ABOUT THE RECALL AND THAT THE CAR WAS FIXED. I ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE BRAKES AGAIN AS THEY SEEM TO HAVE AIR AND MAKE NOISE. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. I SAID I WAS NOT EVEN INFORMED OF A RECALL AND THAT I HAVE ISSUES W THE BRAKES AND I WANT THEM CHECKED EVEN THOUGH THEY FIXED THE RECALL PROBLEM. IT WAS A LOT OF BACK AND FORTH AND THE CAR IS CURRENTLY WITH THE DEALER AND I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE MANAGER WHO ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE ISSUE SHOULD OF BEEN FIXED AT THE VERY LEAST, DURING THE MAINTENANCE CHECK. I HAVE A 2007 HONDA CIVIC SI COUPE. THIS IS NOT MY FIRST MANUAL VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE SHIFTING INTO 3RD BUT DID NOT THINK ANYTHING OF IT. JUST FOUR DAYS AGO MY CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT AT ALL. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CLUTCH IN A YEAR OLD CAR WAS BURNED OUT. THEY CLAIM THAT IT WAS NOT A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT SO IN OTHER WORDS, IT IS MY FAULT. UPON DOING RESEARCH I SEE THAT MANY OTHERS ARE OR HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE ALSO LEARNED THAT THIS PAST APRIL HONDA ISSUED A RECALL ON VEHICLES HAVING 3RD GEAR PROBLEMS BUT HAVE NOT NOTIFIED ALL OWNERS OF THE MAKES AND MODELS COVERED IN THE RECALL. HONDA SERVICE BULLETIN 08-020 RELEASED 4/12/2008 ADDRESSES THIS EXACT PROBLEM AND STATES IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I AM PERUSING LEMON LAW PROCEDURES CURRENTLY, BUT AM CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY ISSUE OF TRANSMISSIONS BLOWING AND CREATING A ROAD HAZARD, OIL ON ROAD, ETC. I PURCHASED A 2007 HONDA CIVIC 5SPD EX IN MAY OF 2007. EVER SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR I HAVE BEEN HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WITH IT. AT TIMES WHEN I AM IN FIRST GEAR AND I UPSHIFT TO SECOND, AS SOON AS I LET OFF OF THE CLUTCH IT WILL POP OUT INTO NEUTRAL AND MY RPMS SHOOT UP. SOMETIMES IT WILL GRIND WHEN I TRY TO PUT IT INTO SECOND OR THIRD AND DOESN'T WANT TO FULLY ENGAGE. WHEN IT DOES FINALLY GO INTO GEAR IT'S REAL ROUGH AND DOESN'T ACCELERATE AT THE SPEED IT SHOULD, IT ACTS LIKE IT DOESN'T WANT TO GO. I HAVE CONTACTED VANDERGRIFF HONDA WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED, AND THEY SAID THAT SOME OF THE CARS HAVE HAD THAT PROBLEM AND THEY CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND IT'S SUPPOSE TO HELP, BUT IF IT DOESN'T THEY MIGHT HAVE TO PULL THE TRANSMISSION OUT AND CHANGE 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. THEY CHANGED MY FLUID AND I AM STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY ARE TELLING ME NOW THAT IT SHOULD HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM AND I SHOULDN'T BE EXPERIENCING IT ANYMORE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE A FEW MONTHS AGO, AND RECENTLY (WITHIN THE LAST FEW WEEKS) HAVE NOTICED THE TRANSMISSION 'SLIPPING' OR NOT ENGAGING PROPERLY. IF IT WERE A CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH (MECHANICAL) IT WOULD BE DESCRIBED AS NEEDING ADJUSTMENT TO LET THE ADJUSTMENT 'OUT' AS TO BETTER ENGAGE THE CLUTCH TO THE POWER SOURCE. SINCE IT IS A CVT, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT AVAILABLE, AND REPLACEMENT IS NECESSARY. MY INCIDENT: I WAS DRIVING HOME, WHICH TAKES ME THROUGH ABOUT 33 MILES OF A WINDING HILLY ROAD. THERE WAS A SLOW DRIVER, HOLDING UP ABOUT 6-7 CARS, OF WHICH I WAS PLACED NEXT TO LAST (ONE BEHIND ME.) THERE IS A PASSING LANE THAT WAS APPROACHING, AND WHEN WE REACHED THE PASSING LANE, THE SLOW-POKE PULLED OUT TO LET US PASS. THE SLIPPING OF THIS TRANSMISSION WAS ALMOST A KILLER-AS WE (ALL OF THE TRAILING CARS) SPED UP TO PASS (ALL WITHIN APPROPRIATE SPEEDS, CLEARANCES, ETC). I HAD JUST STARTED TO ACCELERATE, WHEN THIS !@#$% SLIPPING BEGAN, AND I WATCHED AS THE TACH WENT TO ALMOST RED-LINE, BUT THE CAR DIDN'T GAIN ANY SPEED-IT STAYED AT ABOUT 35-36 MPH, WHICH WAS THE SPEED WE WERE GOING WHEN THE PASSING ATTEMPT STARTED. THIS WAS ALLEGEDLY A PROBLEM IN EARLIER YEAR MODELS OF THE SAME VEHICLE, BUT I AM NOT SURE IF THE CAUSE WAS THE SAME. IN ANY CASE, THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEVELOPMENT, AND I WANT IT FIXED. MY CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY, AND I WILL DRIVE IT TO A HONDA DEALER IN THE NEXT DAY OR TWO, BUT I DO NOT WANT ANY TROUBLE GETTING THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED. ALSO, SINCE THE FIRST NOTICED OCCURRENCE, I HAVE NOTICED THAT THIS IS OCCURRING ALMOST EVERY TIME I TRY TO ACCELERATE. SOMETIMES IT FEELS MINOR, BUT OTHER TIMES IT JUST TACHS UP TO 4,5,OR 6 GRAND, WHILE NOT INCREASING SPEED AT ALL. I HOPE NO ONE DIES BEFORE I CAN GET THIS TO THE DEALER.....ESPECIALLY MY WIFE, OR MYSELF! *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA CIVIC. WHEN SHIFTING FROM SECOND TO THIRD GEAR AT 50 MPH, THE GEAR HESITATES AND MAKES A GRINDING SOUND. THE VEHICLE FEELS AS IF IT WILL STALL. THE FAILURE ONLY OCCURS IN THIRD GEAR. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE, ALTHOUGH OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS LESS THAN 5 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,000.
