This vehicle had 55,000 miles serviced by the dealer only. While driving vehicle warning system started displaying multiple notifications of multiple system failures. When diagnosed the vehicle experienced a blown head gasket. I contacted the dealer and they told me that this was a common problem with the engines in Honda CRV 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Service department informed me on that particular day they had 3 CRVs of the above years, being repaired due to blown head gaskets. This is a safety issue and I can not believe there is not a recall? [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Nov 2025

The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a misfire. The fuel injectors were replaced, and a software update was performed. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights illuminated on a separate occasion while the vehicle mileage was approximately 92,000. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The fuel injectors were replaced, and an unknown software update was performed. The contact stated that while in the process of personally performing an oil change on the vehicle at 123,000 miles, the contact noticed an abnormal fuel odor. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with gasoline intrusion into the engine oil. The dealer informed the contact that since the oil change was not performed in a timely manner, it caused the gasoline and engine oil to mix. The contact disagreed with the assessment. The dealer performed the oil change. Most recently, the contact noticed a coolant leak at approximately 170,000. The contact was unable to locate the origin of the oil leak. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who confirmed that there was coolant intrusion into the cylinder, causing the head gasket to fail. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

I brought my vehicle to a Honda dealership for a recall repair for the fuel pump and it was observed that the vehicle was leaking coolant and oil. The mechanic determined that the head gasket needs to be replaced and this is documented and available for review. There were no warning lights or noticeable clues that there was a major engine malfunction occurring. If not for the recall repair it is likely the motor would have failed causing catastrophic damage from the head gasket issue. The repair is expensive and necessary to continue driving the vehicle. This engine failure is not typical of a honda product and was unexpected.

I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with a recent engine failure in my 2018 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD (VIN: [XXX] ), which occurred despite meticulous maintenance my CR-V experienced a coolant leak through the head gasket, leading to a misfire on cylinder 3 (diagnostic code P0303). Repairs at Heritage Honda in Bel Air, MD, included replacing the head gasket, spark plugs, injectors, and other components, totaling over $6,300. This significant expense for a well-maintained vehicle is disheartening, especially given Honda’s reputation for reliability. Due to a faulty 1.5 engine, the head gasket prematurely failed which could have led to serious engine failure while driving, and an accident could have occurred, if the car had suddenly stopped while being driven. There were several warning lamps, but the warning lamps on this car sometimes go off for no reason and the car was not overheating. I assumed the car was just acting up again. When I let the car sit for a couple of days and the warning lamps were still on, I took the care to a service center where they diagnosed the problem. Honda is aware of the faulty 1.5 engine, but have not issued a recall. Replacement of the head gasket will be over $4,000.

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to sincerely request your understanding and support regarding my vehicle repair. My car to Union Park Honda for the fuel pump recall repair, which was completed under the recall service. However, shortly after that, I was informed that my vehicle now has a head gasket problem, which requires a very expensive repair. Unfortunately, I am currently facing a very difficult financial situation, and it is not possible for me to cover this cost at the moment. This situation has been emotionally and financially challenging for me. I truly appreciate Honda’s care and commitment to its customers, and I am humbly requesting if there is any way the dealership could provide some financial assistance, any special consideration to help me with this repair. Your compassion and understanding would mean a lot to me. Thank you very much for your time and support. Head Gasket Problem The Engine would have rough starts occasionally for about 20 seconds then drive normal. Started about 1 month intermittently until diagnosis and most likely misfire. Vehicle has been inspected by two Honda dealerships stating coolant is leaking into cylinder 3 and has a sticking fuel injector with burn oil on dipstick due to low coolant. Oil change interval between time of symptoms and diagnosis was normal. The last start caused engine codes to appear and when the idle smoothed out the vehicle would only drive about 10 mph until restarted. Safety of not being able to start the engine reliably and not knowing the mph limitations after a misfire when trying to enter a road was a concern for safety.

On 10/28 I received a phone call from my son stating he was trying to head home when he left his parking spot and the car would no go over 10 mph and all system alerts came on. He drove the car a couple yard and then parked it. I told him to stay there and I’d be there in 10 mins. He called a few minutes later to say the car was now acting fine. I told him to stay there because we would take the car to the dealership and leave it to be checked out the next day. I have made multiple attempts to get the fuel pump replaced to no avail. I keep being told by the dealership that the part is not available and they would call when it becomes available. I have called at least four different times to address this issue. My son drives this car down a four lane highway with a speed limit of 60mph. It has been concerning to me that the fuel pump may fail and a tractor trailer may come upon him and cause a crash due to the lag of our vehicle. I have also taken the car to the dealership and left it overnight because all the alerts come on and cycle through. I receive a call the next day from the dealership who is unable to recreate the issue. As a result of the recall and cycling of system messages, I believe the fuel pump to be the issue since symptoms aligned with the recall. I was informed two days later the issue was the head gasket and I was informed it would be better to replace the entire engine. I’ve since read all of the concerns with the 1.5 liter turbo engines and believe the faulty design created this safety hazard. I submitted a case to Honda on 10/30 and have been contacting them since in an effort to resolve the issue. On Thursday 11/14 I asked that the case be escalated and have yet to have anyone from Honda contact me. I have contacted them at least 10 times over the past three weeks with absolutely no response.

While driving on the interstate the engine lost power and entered some sort of limp or low power mode. There were no warnings or indications of any problems on the dashboard. I was in heavy traffic at the time and suddenly a risk to others on the road and myself as the vehicle slowed dramatically despite my attempts to keep up with the flow of traffic. I had the dealer look at the vehicle and they indicated that the headgasket was in the early stages of failing. They indicated that the low power mode was due to engine misfires due to coolant in the combustion chamber. They did not have any explanation as to why a malfunction indicator light was not set nor did a light ever set. No check engine lights, no messages on the driver instrumentation display.

Blown cylinder head gasket required replacement by dealership. Per the dealership, the car displayed failure codes P0302 and P0303. Dealership covered 80% of the cost as "good will" but also mentioned this is a "known issue." The Check Engine Light had displayed just prior to the gasket failure. A day prior my wife and son described the vehicle as "shaking" when the car started (likely related to the engine misfiring as indicated by the P0302 and P0303 error codes found by the dealer) Safety was at risk as wife was driving vehicle when the gasket failed - resulting in a loss of power to the engine and a potential risk for an accident in traffic. Luckily the problem happened less than a quarter mile away from our home and my wife was able to navigate traffic back to our home at a low rate of speed.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and continue driving. The contact stated that the failure recurred on two other occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the turbocharger was damaged due to a bolt intrusion. The dealer later informed the contact that while test-driving the vehicle, the failure recurred, and the vehicle made an abnormal sound. The dealer determined that the turbo shaft was fractured. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because the dealer report indicated that the engine oil was dirty, and the contact did not have all the oil change receipts available. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Honda Engine Oil Dilution Drivability Concerns Warranty Extension. The failure mileage was unknown.

Engine failure while driving on the highway. This is related to the oil dilution issue with the 1.5 turbo engines on our 2018 CRV. Valve got destroyed. Honda dealer replaced the cylinder head under warranty at no cost to us.

When on the highway, if you try to match other cars speed, the car turns on the check engine and starts losing its force. When I check, it says it has a problem with misfire. P0304 & P0303. Honda changed the injectors, coils and spark plugs. The vehicle dilutes a large quantity of gas into the motor oil. 1/4 more of gas than the 3.7 quarts that the engine is supposed to have. The motor is a 1.5 engine. The car isn’t safe because I have to stop on the highway, turn it off and on then start driving again and pray that in 5 minutes the same thing won’t happen again. I’ve had to stop using the car and it’s been parked for 2 months and Honda wipes their hands clean because it’s out of warranty, yet the majority of people with this specific model have the same problem.

I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the 2018 Honda CRV that I purchased from Honda dealership in Bellevue, Washington state just a few short months ago. Initially, after several week ago from the dealer, all warning lights on the dashboard were illuminated, prompting me to bring the car to your dealership for an evaluation. Following your team's assessment, the car was upgraded with software in accordance with Service Bulletin [link to the bulletin: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10154475-0001.pdf However, this was only the beginning of our troubles. In the past few months, my family, including my 9-year-old son, has encountered a series of issues that have severely affected the safety and reliability of the vehicle. We rely on this car for various family activities, including picking our son up from school and transporting him to various extracurricular activities. On multiple occasions, my family has been exposed to a strong smell of gasoline within the vehicle while driving, even with my 9-year-old son and wife in the car. This issue has persisted and continues to be a major cause for concern. Despite these issues, when I reached out to the dealership for assistance, I was informed that I would be required to pay an inspection fee. Given the seriousness of the problems and the potential safety risks associated with the gasoline smell, I felt that it was unjust to be asked to cover this cost and, as a result, I declined the inspection. The most alarming incident occurred last Saturday Oct 21 2023, while driving the vehicle from Bellevue, to Sammamish back home. The car abruptly lost all power while I was traveling at 40mph. This not only posed a significant safety hazard but also led to an emergency situation. I had to pull over, turn off the engine a couple times, and restart the car to regain power. We barely drove this vehicle back home. Throughout this incident, all engine warning lights were illuminated.

AC Discharge Hose replaced due to leak. Many people reported this same issue on online forums on the same vehicle. This is on a 1.5 L engine. Refrigerant type is R-1234yf. There was a recall on the compressor shaft seal deterioration due to this refrigerant type. Could the same be said for the discharge hose? I have already replaced my vehicles discharge hose. For diagnostics and repairs it cost between 800-1100 dollars depending on the shop due to labor. For the average American this is too expensive and some may choose not to repair the AC system and the heat is not good for families with children. There were no warning lamps the car just stopped cooling.

Three years into owning the vehicle the spark plugs were misfiring. When replacing them finding the ceramic part of the plugs were cracking. I replaced all plugs and coils and was good for only about six months. Same thing happened and progressively got worse and in shorter time between all the mis firing codes and engine stumbling and not driving over twenty mile per hour. Now I am at a point where it has become a monthly issue and have been through approximately thirty replaced spark plugs and on the third set of ignition coils. Apparently there is an extended warranty for this issue and for the past visits the dealership says they fixed the recalls and don’t see any other issues. I am taking it to the dealership again and getting it in writing this time. I want the company to fix the resin for the spark plugs consistently misfiring and address why is it progressively getting worse. I find it funny Honda recognizes something is coursing this by extending the warranty and making it unlimited miles to cover the coast of the repairs stated in the letter of these problems but haven’t stated or fixed what’s causing it. I will follow up with the next visit to the dealership with any results. I do believe this is a dated issue for the fact that is been a number of time where the all the dates features on the vehicle shut down and engine stops accelerating at times I was traveling on highways at highway speeds as well as in traffic. Thanks Dan
