I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 70MPH ALONG THE BEELINE HIGHWAY OUTSIDE OF PHOENIX AZ AND NEGOTIATING A GENTLE CURVE IN THE ROAD. IT WAS ABOUT 1:30PM ON A CLEAR DAY. I FELT A STRONG LURCH (THOUGHT I HAD BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND ALTHOUGH I KNEW THERE WERE NO CARS AROUND ME) ALMOST IMMEDIATELY I ATTEMPTED TO STRAIGHTEN THE WHEEL AND FOUND MYSELF UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CAR MOUNTED THE MEDIAN ROAD DIVIDER, CAME DOWN, SPUN 360 DEGREES AND GENTLY DRIFTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I WAS NOT INJURED BUT THE CAR WAS TOTALED. I LOOKED ON LINE AFTER THE ACCIDENT AND DID FIND SOME ACCOUNTS OF THIS KIND OF FROZEN WHEEL SCENARIO WITH THE LURCH THAT I FELT BUT ALSO AT MUCH LOWER SPEEDS. AS I UNDERSTAND YOU KEEP STATISTICS ON VEHICLE MALFUNCTIONS I FEEL IT IMPORTANT TO REPORT THIS UNUSUAL ACCIDENT TO YOUR AGENCY.
CAR PULLED SUDDENLY IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHEN MAKING TURNS AT REASONABLE SPEEDS. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, CAR PULLED FORCEFULLY TO THE RIGHT WHEN BREAKING. ACCIDENTS WERE AVOIDED IN ALL INSTANCES, EVEN THOUGH THE CAR SPUN OUT OF CONTROL MOMENTARILY. BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALER THREE TIMES AND THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE PROBLEM. AS THE PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT AND UNPREDICTABLE, THEY WERE UNABLE TO PICK IT UP ON TEST DRIVES. REPLACED FRONT TIRES, HAD BRAKES CHECKED, BUT HAPPENED AGAIN. JUST HAD THE REAR TIRES REPLACED AND ALIGNMENT DONE, BUT REALLY FEEL THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN THE STEERING. HOW CAN I BE SURE THE CAR IS SAFE?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THERE WAS A LOUD KNOCKING SOUND WHENEVER THE STEERING WAS TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSE THAT THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING COLUMN WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 49,500.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE AND STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO JERK VIOLENTLY. AS RESULT, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE DRIVER SUSTAINED BRUISING AND A CONTUSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT HIM AT A LATER DATE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY TURNED LEFT AND THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A RETAINING WALL. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED BECAUSE THE FRAME WAS BENT. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AWAY BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE POLICE WERE NOTIFIED AND A REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO NOTIFIED AND SENT A REPRESENTATIVE TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000.
TUESDAY EVENING I WAS IN A NEAR ,ISS CAR ACCIDENT WHEREAS A CAR RAN THE STOP SIGN ,I HIT ON MY BRAKES AND LOST ALL CONTROL OF MY STEERING ,BUT LUCKILY CAR STOPPED BEFORE HITTING OTHER CAR ,BUT I COULDN'T STEER AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE ,TODAY 07/14/11 THURSDAY MY HUSBAND WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT WHERE A TRUCK PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF HIM, HE HIT HIS BRAKES AND AGAIN SAME THING NO STEERING SO HE AND THEY TRUCK COLLIDED . 2 SEPARATE INCIDENTS SAME THING HAPPENED ,NOW I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA S THAT IS EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WHICH IS SUPPOSE TO PREVENT WHEELS FROM LOCKING UP SO I DON'T LOSE CONTROL OF STEERING AND BOTH TIMES IT FAILED. *TR
I CURRENTLY LEASE A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA WHICH COMMENCED ON FEBRUARY 23, 2007. I HAVE EXPERIENCED AN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING SINCE DAY ONE. IT IS AS FOLLOWS: DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF ROAD UNEVENNESS, THE CAR DRIFTS LEFT OR RIGHT AND REQUIRES NEARLY CONSTANT CORRECTION AND THEN, OVER-CORRECTION JUST TO MAINTAIN A STRAIGHTFORWARD COURSE. THE CAR DOES NOT WEAVE ERRATICALLY ALL OVER THE ROAD, BUT IT IS JUST SIMPLY A CHORE TO DRIVE, ESPECIALLY IN WINDY CONDITIONS OR IN THE DRAFT OF A PASSING TRANSPORT TRUCK. I WAS VERY CONCERNED WITH THE STEERING PERFORMANCE AS BEING A SAFETY ISSUE AT THE OUTSET. I APPROACHED MY TOYOTA DEALER, AND THEN TOYOTA CANADA WITH MY PROBLEM BUT IT WAS QUITE SIMPLY SHRUGGED OFF. I HAVE SINCE "LEARNED" HOW TO DRIVE THIS CAR IN THE PAST THREE YEARS BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RID MYSELF OF THE LEASE. I HAVE SUFFERED NO ACCIDENTS OR INJURIES BECAUSE OF THIS CAR. MY PURPOSE IN REPORTING THIS COMPLAINT AT THIS TIME IS TO INFORM YOU THAT THE TOYOTA COROLLA STEERING ISSUES DATE BACK AT LEAST AS EARLY AS THE 2007 MODEL YEAR. TOYOTA COROLLA 2007 FREQUENTLY VEERS LEFT (WIND FROM THE RIGHT) - NEARLY OUT OF LANE WHEN A SIDE WIND HITS CAR GOING @ HIGHWAY SPEEDS - 65MPH. I THOUGHT THIS WAS JUST "NORMAL" UNTIL ALL THIS PUBLICITY OVER THE TOYOTA RECALLS, AND FIGURED I SHOULD REPORT IT. I JUST READ AN ARTICLE ON MSNBC'S ABOUT '09-10' COROLLAS HAVING DIFFICULTIES STEERING THEIR VEHICLES. MY '07 COROLLA HAS THE SAME PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A TIRE ISSUE, BUT I HAVE BOUGHT NEW TIRES RECENTLY AND AFTER CHECKING THE AIR PRESSURE, THE ISSUE REMAINS. IT IS WORSE DURING HIGH WINDS, AS MY CAR HAS A FEELING LIKE I WILL LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR. *TR
I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA FOR SOME TIME NOW. WHEN I AM ON THE HIGHWAY MY CAR SWERVES BACK AND FORTH. I HAVE TO REALLY HOLD DOWN ON THE WHEEL TO GET IT TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. I WENT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND THEY SAID THAT IT WAS SLIGHTLY UNALIGNED AND THAT THE RE ALIGNED THE STEERING. AFTER THIS THE CAR STILL HAS PROBLEMS WHEN DRIVING AND TOYOTA SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE AT ALL. I HAVE HAD THREE NEAR ACCIDENTS ON THE HIGHWAY DO TO THE CAR SWERVING BUT LUCKILY NOBODY HAS BEEN HURT. MY STEERING WHEEL HAS BEEN LOCKING UP IN MY 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA LE. IT WILL LOCK AND NOT ALLOW ME TO TURN THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, AND I HAVE TO LIFT THE STEERING WHEEL, AND HOPE IT WILL THEN ALLOW ME TO TURN THE KEY. THUS FAR, IT HAS NOT LOCKED WHILE DRIVING, BUT I AM AFRAID IT COULD. IT SOMETIMES HAPPENS ONCE A WEEK, OR AS OFTEN AS FIVE TIMES A DAY! THIS BEGAN JULY 14, 2010 AND CONTINUES TODAY AUGUST 24, 2010. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WILL BE REPLACING THE LOCKING CYLINDER AS SOON AS THE ORDERED PARTS COME IN BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT IS THE PROBLEM. *TR
2007 TOYOTA COROLLA STEERING PROBLEM - ON MAY 26, 2010 WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT APPROX. 50MPH MY COROLLA BEGAN TO VEER TO THE LEFT, MY DAUGHTER WAS UNABLE TO STRAIGHTEN THE WHEEL AND IT FELT "LOCKED" IN PLACE. THE VEERING RESULTED IN THE CAR SPINNING OUT ON THE FREEWAY AND CRASHING INTO ANOTHER CAR. TWO WITNESSES REPORTED THAT FOR NO APPARENT REASON THE CAR STARTED TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL ON THE DRY FREEWAY. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN TRAVELING AT 20 MPH ,THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. THE DEALERSHIP WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A INTERNAL MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT FEELS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA COROLLA 2007 GOING BACK HOME, I WAS DRIVING APPR. 45 M/HR ON HIGHWAY, SUDDENLY MY I FELT THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKING AND SUDDENLY LOST CONTROL OVER MY CAR, I HIT THE RIGHT HIGHWAY WALL AND THEN THE LEFT HIGHWAY WALL. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER FIVE TIMES FOR THE FAILURE. THE DEALER TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND STATED IT WAS THE TIRES. THE DEALER REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES; HOWEVER THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 32,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
I BOUGHT A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA TWO YEARS AGO AND HAVE NOTICED THAT SOMETIMES AT HIGH SPEED IT FEELS AS IF I'M LOOSING CONTROL OF THE CAR AND THAT THE STEERING FEELS LOOSE. AT THE BEGINNING, I DIDN'T PAY MUCH ATTENTION, BUT THIS HAD CREATED ME TO FEEL INSECURE WHEN I'M DRIVING FAST. I'M CURRENTLY AFRAID TO DRIVE OVER 55MPH BECAUSE I HAVE NOTICED THAT OVER THAT SPEED IT FEELS AS IF THE CAR IS GOING THRU A LOT OF WIND. I CAN'T REALLY TELL IF THE CAR IS GOING IN ONE PARTICULAR DIRECTION, IT JUST FEELS AS IF I CAN'T MAKE IT GO STRAIGHT AND HAVE TO CONSTANTLY CORRECT THE DIRECTION I'M DRIVING, EVEN IF IT'S A STRAIGHT ROAD. I TOOK THE CAR TO A SHOP TO GET IT CHECKED BUT THEY SAID THE COMPUTER DID NOT INDICATE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING SINCE 2003 AND THE LAST TWO YEARS HAVE BEEN VERY STRESSFUL, ALL THIS TIME I'VE BEEN THINKING IT WAS ME THAT COULDN'T KEEP CONTROL OF THE CAR AND HAD EVEN CONSIDERED RETAKING DRIVING CLASSES. NOT A CRASH, BUT A CONCERN. I READ THAT YOU ARE LOOKING INTO STEERING OF COROLLAS FROM 2009 AND LATER, BUT PLEASE LOOK INTO EARLIER MODELS AS WELL. TWO MONTHS AGO A PROBLEM OCCURRED WITH MY CAR. TWICE WHILE DRIVING ON SLIGHTLY UNEVEN FREEWAYS, MY CAR HAS FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO LEAVE THE LANE, STEERING INTO THE NEXT LANE. I GRABBED THE WHEEL TIGHTER AND TURNED TO CORRECT IT, SO NO CRASH, BUT THE CAR DID MOVE SEVERAL FEET OVER BEFORE I GRABBED THE STEERING WHEEL. BOTH TIMES I WAS GOING 75-80 MPH. I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY, BUT THEN READ ABOUT STEERING PROBLEMS. AS LONG AS I DRIVE LESS THAN 70, IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN. (AND I HAVE OFTEN DRIVEN FAST IN BOTH THIS CAR AND PREVIOUS ONES) THE PROBLEM IS I CAN'T EXACTLY TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND SAY "SOMETIMES IT STEERS FUNNY" AS A DESCRIPTION. *TR
2007 TOYOTA COROLLA WANDERS AT HIGH SPEEDS. VERY MUCH LIKE GETTING PUSHED BY HIGH WINDS. I FIND MY SELF FIGHTING TO KEEP LANE POSITION. NEW PREMIUM TIRES AND ALIGNMENT FROM REPUTABLE TIRE DEALER HAS NOT CHANGED THE BEHAVIOR. *TR

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH WITH PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE, THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO VIBRATE. ALTHOUGH, IT WAS RAINING WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE NOT A FACTOR. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA DEALER ON OCTOBER 5, 2009. THE DEALER STATED THAT HE COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG AND THAT HE COULD ROTATE, AND BALANCE THE TIRES. THE CONTACT REFUSED TO HAVE THE TIRES ROTATED BUT ACCEPTED HAVING THEM BALANCED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,000.
IN THE PAST 2 1/2 YEARS I RENTED TWO TOYOTA COROLLA'S FROM HERTZ CAR RENTAL. THEY BOTH HAD SEVERE STEERING PROBLEMS. THEY WOULD VEER ONE WAY, SAY RIGHT FOR EXAMPLE. A SMALL STEERING WHEEL TURN TO THE LEFT DID NOTHING AND THE CAR KEPT GOING RIGHT. THEN ANOTHER SMALL TURN TO THE LEFT AND THE CAR WOULD VEER SHARPLY TO THE LEFT. IN THE FIRST CASE, IN CALIFORNIA, WHEN THE CAR VEERED LEFT I HAD AN ACCIDENT WITH ANOTHER CAR IN THE LANE TO THE LEFT. AFTER STRAIGHTEN THINGS OUT WITH THE OTHER DRIVER AND THE POLICE, I TOOK THE STILL-DRIVABLE CAR, NO LONGER WITH A LEFT SIDE MIRROR TO A HERTZ AGENCY AND EXCHANGED IT FOR A FORD AUTOMOBILE. IT STEERED FINE. FOR THE SECOND TIME, A YEAR LATER, I THOUGHT (INCORRECTLY) THAT THE FIRST CAR WAS ACCIDENTALLY OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND I RENTED ANOTHER TOYOTA COROLLA FROM A HERTZ AGENCY IN FLORIDA. IT VEERED ALL OVER THE ROAD TOO. POLICEWOMAN STOPPED ME AND SAID I HAD BEEN REPORTED AS DRIVING ERRATICALLY. WHEN SHE LEARNED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE CAR SHE TOLD ME TO GET TO THE NEAREST PHONE AND CALL HERTZ (80 MILES AWAY) AND HAVE THEM BRING ME ANOTHER CAR. ACTUALLY, I WENT TO THE NEAREST MOTEL AND CALLED HERTZ FROM THERE. IT TOOK UNTIL THE NEXT DAY FOR THEMTO BRING A DIFFERENT CAR, NOT A TOYOTA. IT STEERED FINE. THOSE COROLLA'S WERE DANGEROUS. I RENTED THEM BECAUSE I OWNED AN OLD 1993 TOYOTA COROLLA AND IT WAS A WONDERFUL CAR AND CERTAINLY HAD NO STEERING DIFFICULTIES. DATES BELOW ARE APPROXIMATE. *TR
