The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, there was an abnormal screeching sound coming from the vehicle. The contact then saw sparks coming from the rear driver’s side of the vehicle, and the driver’s side rear wheel was turned sideways. The vehicle was pulled over to the shoulder and was later towed back to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and the contact was informed that the ball joint, control arms, front suspension, and several other unknown parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The independent mechanic made the contact aware of an unknown NHTSA Campaign Number; however, the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

Severe rust to the frame of my 2004 Toyota Tundra SR5 double cab. There are holes through the frame. Took it for an oil change and the mechanic told me to be careful. Crawled under the truck and couldn't believe how bad it was.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the front driver's side lower ball joint detached, causing the driver's side wheel to separate from the vehicle, and the vehicle lowered to the ground. The vehicle was towed to the residence, where it was diagnosed by an independent mechanic. The mechanic determined that the front driver's side lower ball joint needed to be replaced. The mechanic replaced the front driver's side and passenger's side lower ball joints. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired by an unknown dealer for the same failure. The contact stated that the front driver's side and passenger's side ball joints failed several times while driving and were replaced; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contact stated while driving approximately 60-65 MPH, the driver's side ball joint failed, which damaged the running board, the brakes, the driver's side door, the tie rod, the coil springs, the lower control arm, and the lower and upper ball joints. The vehicle skidded to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V225000 (Suspension), 07V013000 (Suspension) and 22E002000 (Suspension); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON TAKING HIS VEHICLE TO HERITAGE TOYOTA (1620 SHELBURNE RD, SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT 05403) FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V741000 (AIR BAGS) REPAIR, THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN INFORMED HIM THAT SEVERE CORROSION HAD FORMED ON THE TOP OF THE VEHICLE'S UNDERCARRIAGE. THE CONTACT WAS SHOWN THE CORROSION DAMAGE AND NOTICED THAT HOLES AND MISSING PARTS WERE UNDER THE SUBFRAME. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IN 2014, A SPECIAL COATING WAS PLACED ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE TO PREVENT CORROSION HOWEVER, THE COATING FAILED TO PREVENT THE RUST CONDITION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

FRAME OF THE TRUCK IS COMPLETELY RUSTED. THE UPPER ARM BOLTS ARE NOT ABLE TO BE CONNECTED TO THE FRAME AS THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED. THE REST OF THE FRAME IS BEING EVALUATED AT THIS TIME. CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY SAY THAT THE THIS TRUCK IS NOT PART OF THE RE-CALL, BUT THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING UNTIL THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION TELLS THEM THEY HAVE TO DO EXTEND THE RECALL INTO OTHER YEARS OF THE TUNDRAS. AS OF RIGHT NOW IT ONLY INCLUDES THE 2007-2008 TRUCKS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE DROPPED TO THE LEFT TWICE. DURING THE SECOND DROP, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT METAL TO METAL WAS RUBBING ON THE LOWER BALL JOINT. THE CONTACT COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND NOTICED THAT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS RESTING ON THE WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BALL JOINT SEPARATED AND DAMAGED THE FRONT SUSPENSION AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. DRIVING AT LOW SPEED ON CITY STREET. FRONT LEFT WHEEL COLLAPSED DUE TO BROKEN BALL JOINT. ALL WHEELS HAD BEEN REPLACED A COUPLE OF DAYS PRIOR BY TIRE DEALER. VEHICLE HAD A RECALL IN 2005 FOR BALL JOINTS WHICH WAS COMPLETED AT 75K MILES ON MARCH, 2007. CURRENT MILEAGE IS 299,525 MILES ON THAT REPLACEMENT. I DO NOT THINK MANY OWNERS KEEP VEHICLE FOR THAT NUMBER OF MILES. HOWEVER VEHICLE IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND POTENTIAL SEEMS TO EXIST FOR BEARING FAILURE. I DO NOT THINK THAT WHEEL REPLACEMENT WAS THE CAUSE THOUGH SOMETHING MAY HAVE LOOSENED DURING WHEEL INSTALLATION. I DID NOT FILE A POLICE REPORT OR INSURANCE CLAIM. NO OTHER VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED. LEFT FRONT BALL JOINT ON 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA 4WD FAILED AND PULLED OUT OF SOCKET WITH NO WARNING (E.G. LOOSE STEERING, NOISE, OR VIBRATION) AT APPROX. 2 MPH IN PARKING LOT. THIS CAUSED THE LEFT AXLE TO PULL OUT AND HIT THE GROUND DAMAGING THE SPLINES. THERE WAS AN EARLIER RECALL FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM AND THE RECALL SERVICE WAS PERFORMED BY INSTALLING A "NEW" REPLACEMENT BALL JOINT IN 2009. LUCKILY WE HAD JUST EXITED A FREEWAY TRAVELING AT 65 MPH. SINCE THERE WAS NO "ACCIDENT" AND NO "COMPREHENSIVE" DAMAGES, THE AUTO INSURANCE DID NOT COVER ANY OF THE $1,200 DAMAGE OR $200 RENTAL CAR EXPENSE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT APPROX. 50-55 MPH, THE FRONT LEFT SIDE SUDDENLY JOLTED DOWNWARD, SPARKS AND SMOKE WERE VIEWED BY BOTH SIDE VIEW AND REAR VIEW MIRRORS, I SLOWLY APPLIED BRAKES THINKING IT WAS ONLY A BLOW OUT BUT FROM THE GRINDING METAL AGAINST CEMENT SOUND, I REALIZED IT WAS MUCH WORSE THAN A BLOW OUT.WHEN FINALLY COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, I SAW THE WHOLE WHEEL COMPLETELY SHEARED FROM THE FRONT SUSPENSION, FORTUNATELY, THE WHEEL LODGED ITSELF INSIDE THE WHEEL WELL AND THE RUNNING BOARD ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. IT COULD HAVE EASILY GONE UNDERNEATH AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO FLIP OVER OR EVEN INTO OTHER VEHICLE'S ON ROAD. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE ELSE OR OTHER VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED. AFTER INSURANCE COMPANY ADJUSTER INSPECTED THEY DETERMINED IT TO BE TOTALED. I FIND THIS EXTREMELY UPSETTING, DO I HAVE ANY RECOURSE? THERE COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN TWO FATALITIES. PLEASE HELP!!! TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE SWERVED TO THE RIGHT AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC, WHO INSPECTED THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS SNAPPED, CAUSING THE TIRES TO COLLAPSE INWARD AND UNDER THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT AXLE WAS FOUND TO BE FRACTURED. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE LOWER BALL JOINTS, CONTROL ARM AND THE AXLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN AND REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V01300 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINT). THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 263,000.

MY SISTER IN LAW WAS DRIVING SOUTHBOUND ON U.S. INTER STATE 101. FRONT LEFT SUSPENSION COLLAPSE, UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINT COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE, TIRE BLEW OUT ON IMPACT, THE ONLY THING THAT IS HOLDING THE TIRE WAS THE BRAKE LINE. I CALLED TOYOTA ON 8-16-12. THE CALL CENTER WAS OUT SOURCES AND THE EMPLOYEE DIDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH WELL. I HAVE TO EXPLAINED SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE INCIDENT. HE GAVE ME A CASE #12081161743 AND SAY A CASE MANAGER WOULD CALL ME WITHIN 24 HRS. TWENTY MINUTES LATER I GOT A CALL FROM THE CALL CENTER. THE EMPLOYEE SAY HE WILL TRANSFER ME TO A CASE MANAGER BECAUSE MY CASE WAS URGENT . A CASE MANAGER ([XXX]) IN CALIFORNIA COME ON LINE AND WANTED ME TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING TO HER. IN THE MIDDLE OF EXPLAINING (THE FOURTH TIME) SHE HUNG UP ON ME. I CALLED THE CALL CENTER AND AGAIN. I HAVE TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING AGAIN.
