Operator reported that under braking, they lost all power assist to the brake pedal and brake pedal was extremely hard to push. This resulted in extended stopping distance and difficulty slowing the vehicle down. It was found that the vacuum pump had failed. We are a large utility fleet, and this issue has occurred a number of times to our Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon vehicles and we deem this a safety issue. These incidents have been reported to the OEM and we recently received the attached reply, "We submitted a “Speak up for Safety Campaign” to our internal quality team for review. These reviews are conducted to determine if there is a manufacturing or design defect that could impact quality. After review, the case was closed with no action to be taken." The operators receive no warning prior to the failure.
The brake pedal suddenly became very stiff with no warning while driving at highway speeds. Braking was very difficult and required me to swerve into another lane to not impact a car and run a red light. I managed to stop afterwards. This was caused by the cam driven vacuum pump failing. No warning of any kind was given.
Vacuum pump failed and developed a tear almost leading to an accident. Now part of the pump system broke into motor leading to potential engine failure.

During a preventative maintenance inspection, the mechanic found oil coming from the vacuum pump. Due to the number of failed vacuum pumps the fleet has been experiencing, the mechanic decided to replace the pump in order to avoid a vacuum pump failure during operations.

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while backing out of a parking space at a very slow speed, the braking system suddenly malfunctioned and erroneously released causing the vehicle to surge backward and crash into a second parked vehicle. During the incident, no injuries were reported and a police report was taken at the scene. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the rear driver side brake caliper and brake hose were faulty and needed to be replaced. The caliper and hose were replaced and the failure was remedied. The manufacturer was also contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000.
In September 2020 the brakes failed suddenly. The brake booster was was replaced. Approximately 6 months later they failed again in heavy traffic with no warning. The brake booster was replaced by a different shop, failed and then replaced again at the same visit.

AFTER DRIVING 10 MILES, I PARKED MY VEHICLE IN MY APARTMENT PARKING LOT. APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES LATER, I GOT BACK IN MY VEHICLE TO LEAVE. UPON TURNING ON MY VEHICLE, I FELT MY BRAKES HARD WHEN I PUT MY VEHICLE IN REVERSE. THE VEHICLE STARTED ROLLING BACK WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE AND I HAD TO PRESS ON THE BRAKES EXTREMELY HARD TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING. THE VEHICLE STRUGGLED TO STOP, SKID AND THEN STOPPED. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE AND IT DID THE SAME THING. I LIVE ACROSS THE STREET FROM PEP BOYS SO I CAUTIOUSLY DROVE IT TO PEP BOYS AND THEY FOUND THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM HOSE WAS UNPLUGGED. THEY RECONNECTED IT, BUT NOW I'M SCARED FOR MY SAFETY FROM THE POSSIBILITY OF THE HOSE DISCONNECTING WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THEY MENTIONED THE BRAKE BOOSTER HAS TO BE REPLACED, BUT THEY ARE CONFUSED AS TO WHY IT'S HAPPENING BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS FAIRLY NEW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 CHEVROLET COLORADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 TO 45 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS FIRM. THE CONTACT MADE A TURN AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP INDEPENDENTLY. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITH CODE P0017 (CAMSHAFT POSITION). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS DIAGNOSED THAT PIECES OF METAL DETACHED FROM THE VACUUM PUMP INTO THE ENGINE, WHICH DAMAGED THE DRIVER SIDE CAMSHAFT, THE VACUUM PUMP, CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND THE DRIVER SIDE CAMSHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE CAMSHAFT SOLENOID DUE TO METAL ON THE SCREEN AND METAL WAS ALSO IN THE OIL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE REMAINED AT THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED MARTIN CHEVROLET (23505 HAWTHORNE BLVD, TORRANCE, CA 90505), AND INFORMED THE DEALER OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.

APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION AND OBSERVED A YELLOW LIGHT. I WAS TRAVELING 35MPH AS POSTED AND APPLIED THE BRAKES ONLY TO HAVE THE PEDAL GO ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIRE WALL. THE TRUCK HAD NO BRAKING POWER AND ONLY SLOWED TO ABOUT 15MPG AFTER APPLYING FOR ROUGHLY 40-50 YARDS. I ENDED UP RUNNING INTO THE INTERSECTION COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT PROCEEDED ON GREEN.
