THE FORD RECALL DUE TO POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUES WITH THE TAKATA AIRBAGS IS QUITE RESTRICTIVE AND NOT APPROPRIATE TO THIS MATTER. I PURCHASED MY CAR IN HAWAII AND SINCE 2005, HAVE LIVED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, SOUTHERN ARIZONA AND NEW MEXICO. NEVERTHELESS, WHEN I MADE THE APPOINTMENT WITH A FORD DEALERSHIP IN NEW MEXICO, EVEN THOUGH I LISTED THE REASON FOR MY REQUESTED SERVICE, I ONLY WAS TOLD ABOUT THIS RESTRICTION AFTER DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WOULD HAVE BEEN WILLING TO PAY A NOMINAL FEE TO HAVE THESE AIRBAGS REPLACED BUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS UNWILLING TO LISTEN. THIS IS THE SECOND "SAFETY" MATTER FOR THIS CAR THAT HAS BEEN RAISED BY FORD THAT THEY HAVE REFUSED TO ADDRESS (THE FIRST BEING A FRONT SUSPENSION MATTER) AND I'M NOT PLEASED. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE AND IF THE NHTSA IS HAVING HEARINGS ON THIS MATTER, I WOULD ENCOURAGE THE COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER EXPANDING THE FORD RECALL TO ALL CARS WITH THESE AIRBAGS. *TR

ALL DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAGS SHOULD BE REPLACED. CURRENTLY NHTSA HAS ONLY RECALLED CARS SOLD OR REGISTERED IN FL, HA, PUERTO RICO, & U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. IT HAS BEEN WELL DOCUMENTED THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED AND KILLED DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAGS IN SOME OF THE REMAINING 48 STATES. NHTSA FAILURE TO RECALL ALL THE DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAGS LEAVES EVERYONE IN 48 STATES EXPOSED TO THE RISK OF SEVERE INJURY AND DEATH DUE TO A KNOWN PRODUCT DEFECT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD MUSTANG. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG INDICATOR FAILED TO ILLUMINATE WHEN SEATED IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT CAUSING THE AIR BAG TO DEACTIVATE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE SEAT SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,397.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

THIS COMPLAINT IS REGARDING AN AIR-BAG LIGHT THAT COMES ON WHEN DRIVING MY 2005 MUSTANG. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM JOE MEYERS FORD IN HOUSTON. WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR, THE AIR-BAG LIGHT STARTED COMING ON RANDOMLY. IT MIGHT NOT COME ON FOR DAYS, THEN DECIDES TO COME ON. THE OWNER'S MANUAL SAYS IF THIS LIGHT COMES ON TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, NOTHING ELSE. THE FIRST TIME I BROUGHT IT TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT'S ATTENTION, I WAS TOLD IF IT WASN'T ON IT WASN'T A PROBLEM. WITHIN MY SECOND YEAR OF OWNERSHIP, THE AIR-BAG LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE. THIS TIME THE SERVICE AGAIN SAW THE LIGHT ON. THEY KEPT THE CAR, SOLD ME A BATTERY SERVICE WHERE THEY REMOVED THE CABLE AND SPRAYED ANTI-CORROSION STUFF ON THE TERMINAL. THIS DID NOT CHANGE THE RANDOM LIGHT COMING ON WHILE DRIVING. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE FORD MUSTANG RECALL TO RE-PROGRAM THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THIS DID NOT CHANGE THE RANDOM LIGHT COMING ON WHILE DRIVING. RECEIVED A CALL IN MAY 2008 THAT THEY HAD A REPLACEMENT SENSOR FOR MY CAR. BROUGHT IT IN AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE WRONG SENSOR. THE SERVICE AGENT TOLD ME TO CALL BACK LATER (NO SPECIFIC TIME LINE)TO SEE IF THEY HAD THE NEW SENSOR. THE CAR'S WARRANTY WAS UP IN JULY 2008, THE LIGHT COMES ON ALL THE TIME, AND THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SENSOR FOR MY CAR, BUT THERE ARE 5 DEALERS IN TOWN THAT HAVE THEM. I PLAN TO BRING THE CAR BACK THIS NEXT WEEK FOR THEM TO FIX THE SENSOR, AND FEEL THEY SHOULD HONOR THE WARRANTY. WHETHER THEY FIX THE PROBLEM OR NOT REMAINS TO BE SEEN. *TR

THE AIR BAG LIGHT BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL COMES ON AT RANDOM OCCASIONS. AFTER STARTING THE CAR IN COOL WET WEATHER, OR AFTER THE 3RD OR 4TH STOP IN A SERIES OF ERRANDS. IT STAYS ON UNTIL I TURN THE IGNITION OFF. AFTER TURNING THE IGNITION ON AGAIN, SOMETIMES IT STAYS ON AGAIN, AND MUCH OF THE TIME IT GOES OFF AFTER THE INITIAL COMPUTER CHECK. OF COURSE THE DEALER SAYS THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING UNLESS IT IS ON ALL OF THE TIME. SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN IT DECIDES TO STAY ON? WILL IT NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT? *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD MUSTANG GT. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS STRUCK ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE DOOR. THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED AND BROKE HER WRIST IN EIGHT PLACES. THE SKIN WAS BURNED OFF OF HER OTHER ARM. SEVEN PINS AND RODS HAD TO BE INSERTED IN HER WRIST, BUT IT STILL CANNOT BE MOVED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT HAS PICTURES. ON FEBRUARY 27, 2008, SHE SAW A NEWSCAST STATING THAT THERE WOULD SOON BE A SAFETY RECALL ON THE HARSH DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAG AND THE FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH FMVSS. THE POWERTRAIN, ENGINE SIZE, AND VIN WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 31,000.
