2003 HONDA/ODYSSEY/5DR EX VEHICLE # [XXX]. TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT TO 3RD GEAR ,FREQUENCY 2-4 TIMES IN ONE HOUR OF CITY DRIVING,CONSEQUENCES ALMOST HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT UNABLE TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF SUDDEN DOWN SHIFT. @40-60 KM/H THE DAY BEFORE THIS ALMOST SERIOUS ACCIDENT,I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MAPLE HONDA 98 AUTO VAUGHAN DRIVE,ONTARIO. THEY STATED IT WAS A LACK OF FLUID IN THE TRANSMISSION ADDED FLUID THE PROBLEM THE PROBLEM STILL PRESENT AND PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORST. PLEASE NOTE HONDA HAD A RECALL ON THERE 1999-2001 ODYSSEY WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS THAT I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING SUDDEN DOWN SHIFT ,3RD GEAR CLUTCH PACK. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE. CAR WAS MAKING A WHINNING NOISE WHEN ACCELERATING, TOOK TO THE DEALER WHO FLUSHED THE TRANSMISSION. SOON AFTER THERE WAS THE SMELL OF FLUID BURNING. DEALER INFORMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. THE RECALL ISSUED IN 2004 FOR THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WAS INSTALLED ON THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE RESEARCHED WHERE TRANSMISSION FAILURE IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE MODEL YEAR AND VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP ACKNOWLEDGED THAT TRANSMISSIONS ARE AN ISSUE ON THIS VEHICLE, HOWEVER THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING TO ADDRESS THE DEFECTS AND FAILURES WITH THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD CONSIDERING THE TRANSMISSION CAN LOCK AT HIGH SPEEDS AND MAY CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
I OWN A HONDA 2003 ODYSSEY WITH APPROXIMATELY 108,000 MILES AND THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP ON ME AND WOULD GO FORWARD VERY SLOW. THE CAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED, BUT AFTER RESEARCH, I COME TO FIND OUT THAT HONDA HAS HAD NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WITH THE 2003 ODYSSEY AND HONDA HAS DONE NOTHING. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP AND RACE ON I-95 IN HEAVY WEEKEND TRAFFIC. DIAGNOSTICS BY THE DEALERSHIP RESULTED IN THE ROOT CAUSE BEING TRANSMISSION AND THROTTLE-BODY FAILURE. UNACCEPTABLE FOR A 2003 MODEL HONDA WITH 124K MILES. *TR
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS A SIGNIFICANT JOLT WAS FELT WHEN GEARS SHIFTED ON 2003 ODYSSEY. SOMETIMES THE SHIFT WOULD COME WITH A SLIGHT DELAY. FINALLY, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. AT THE END I HAD TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION AND PCM. *TR
I EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC BREAKDOWN OF THE TRANSMISSION IN MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY. THE CAR LITERALLY STOPPED WHILE DRIVING AND TURNED COMPLETELY OFF, RENDERING THE CAR UNCONTROLLABLE. WE NARROWLY MISSED BEING HIT FROM BEHIND. MY CAR HAS 83,000 AND HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED INCLUDING TRANSMISSION POWER FLUSHES. THIS IS THE 2ND TRANSMISSION IN THIS VEHICLE. AT 40,000 THE FIRST TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE. AMERICAN HONDA AGREED TO REPLACE THAT TRANSMISSION FOR FREE EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE I HAD BEEN COMPLAINING BEFORE THE WARRANTY RAN OUT. THE HONDA DEALER ASSURED ME THAT THE NEW TRANSMISSION WAS OF A DIFFERENT DESIGN AND WOULD NOT EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEMS. ABOUT 40,000 MILES LATER THE SECOND TRANSMISSION JUST STOPPED DEAD. HAD I BEEN ON THE PARKWAY OR TURNPIKE I WOULD NOT BE HERE WRITING THIS COMPLAINT. THE NEW TRANSMISSION WILL COST OVER $3000. NHTSA MUST STOP THIS CORPORATION FROM IGNORING THEIR LIABILITY AND MAKE THEM RECALL AND REIMBURSE ALL ODYSSEY OWNERS FOR THEIR FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE A FAMILY IS KILLED. AFTER ALL THIS IS A FAMILY VAN! *TR
THE SHIFT INTERLOCK FAILED IN MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY AND IT ROLLED BACKWARDS IN A PARKING GARAGE AND HIT TWO PARKED CARS. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION IN ANY GEAR AND APPARENTLY THAT DAY I PULLED MY KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION WHILE IT WAS STILL IN DRIVE. THE PARKING SPACE SEEMED LEVEL SO I DIDN'T APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE. IT MUST HAVE ROLLED WHEN OTHER CARS DROVE PAST. I CALLED HONDA THAT DAY TO REPORT IT AND ATTEMPTED TO GET THEM TO PAY FOR THE FAILURE. THEY WOULDN'T PAY SAYING THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAD THE PROBLEM FIXED AT MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP FOR JUST OVER $500.00 THE DAMAGE TO MY CAR WAS OVER $2500.00 AND I DID DAMAGE TO TWO OTHER CARS THAT MY INSURANCE COMPANY HAD TO PAY FOR. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS AROUND AND NO ONE GOT HURT. THIS HAPPENED IN A HOSPITAL PARKING GARAGE. *TR

2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED (SLIPPING BETWEEN THE GEARS) AT 113,000 MILES. HAVE VISITED HONDA DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT THE CAR, WE HAVE BEEN TOLD WE NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION (TRANSMISSION IS DEAD BASICALLY). A RE-BUILT ONE WOULD COST ~$4500 - $5000. WITH ALL THE MAJOR SERVICES HAVE BEEN DONE AT DEALER SERVICE CENTER, THE TRANSMISSION IS DEAD TOO PREMATURELY. HONDA NEEDS TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST. THE RECALL OF 2004 DIDN'T FULLY ADDRESS THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE WHICH MAKES THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WAY TOO EARLY. *TR

I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT OR INJURY DUE TO THIS, BUT MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY CAN BE TURNED OFF AND THE KEYS REMOVED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STILL IN GEAR. I HAVE HAD IT ROLL BACK A FEW FEET BEFORE I CAUGHT IT A COUPLE OF TIMES. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION OF MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS FAILED AFTER 130000 MILES. IT SLIPS GETTING INTO AND OUT OF 3RD GEAR, AND THERE IS DEBRIS IN THE FLUID, INDICATING THAT CLUTCH DISKS ARE DEGRADING AND GETTING INTO THE HYDRAULIC CONTROLS. METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AND DRIVEN GENTLY AND PRIMARILY ON LONG TRIPS. ON MORE THAN A FEW OCCASIONS, THE SLIPPAGE HAPPENED AS MY LEARNING-TO-DRIVE DAUGHTER WAS PULLING INTO TRAFFIC FROM A STOP SIGN ON A BUSY ROAD, ONLY TO HAVE THE ENGINE REV WAY UP WHILE NOT MOVING AND DRIFTING INTO THE PATH OF CROSSING TRAFFIC. IT IS NOW SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY UNDRIVEABLE. *TR
JUST BOUGHT A 2003 WITH 130K MI HAS HAD EXCELLENT SERVICE FROM THE ORIGINAL SELLING DEALER. TRANSMISSION IS NOW WHINING WHEN ACCELERATOR IS PRESSED AT ALL. WAS HOPING FOR A CV JOINT, BUT TURNED OUT TO BE THE DIFFERENTIAL GOING BAD. WE NEED TO LEAVE ON VACATION IN A FEW DAYS, AND NOW WILL BE RENTING A VAN AT THE TUNE OF ABOUT $900 AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN HONDA FOR NOT TAKING CAR OF THESE TRANSMISSION ISSUES. SEVERAL MOTOR MOUNTS ARE FAILING. A COUPLE OF VERY HIGH TICKET ITEMS. HONDA PLEASE STEP UP TO THE PLATE TO KEEP A CERTAIN LEVEL OF CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. *TR
2003 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS AN APPARENT DESIGN FLAW IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AFTER 60,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. DRIVING THE CAR DURING THE 3 DAYS AFTER FAILURE WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WITH THE CLUTCH INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING CAUSING HIGH REVVING AND LACK OF CONTROL. SLOWING DOWN (RESULTING IN DOWNSHIFTING) CAUSES THE CAR TO "JERK" SINCE THE CLUTCH ISN'T FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND THE CAR ISN'T ABLE TO SMOOTHLY CHANGE GEARS. HONDA ISSUED A RECALL IN 2004 TO ADD AN "OIL JET" INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION ON THE 2ND GEAR TO PREVENT OVERHEATING, BUT THIS FIX HASN'T FIXED THEIR DESIGN FLAW. DESPITE HAVING THIS RECALL TAKEN CARE OF BY THE DEALERSHIP IN 2004, THE TRANSMISSION HAS STILL FAILED. HONDA APPARENTLY ISSUED A WARRANTY EXTENSION, BUT I NEVER RECEIVED NOTICE OF THIS EXTENSION AND THE DEALERSHIP HAD NO DETAILS ON THIS WARRANTY EXTENSION (OTHER THAN TO TELL ME I AM BEYOND THAT EXTENSION DUE TO TIME LAPSE). HONDA NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS DESIGN FLAW. IT CAUSES A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF NOT IMMEDIATELY ADDRESSED, NOT TO MENTION A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX FOR A PROBLEM THAT HAS PLAGUED HUNDREDS OR PERHAPS THOUSANDS OF 1999-2003 (OR BEYOND) ODYSSEY OWNERS. *TR
WITH NO WARNING OR INDICATION, OUR 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, WITH 111K MILES, SHIFTED ITSELF FROM D TO SECOND OR FIRST GEAR AT 70 MPH. THE LEVER AND INDICATOR STAYED IN D THE WHOLE TIME AND NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO OR FOLLOWING THE EVENT. IT WAS VIOLENT, LIKE SLAMMING THE BRAKES, BUT OF COURSE WITH ONLY THE FRONT WHEELS DIGGING IN CREATING A DIFFICULT CONTROL SITUATION. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE LUCK OF A DRY AND STRAIGHT THREE LANE HIGHWAY WITH NO CLOSELY FOLLOWING TRAFFIC, WITH SHARP SKILLS AT THE WHEEL NECESSARY, IT WOULD HAVE WRECKED US WITH POTENTIALLY SEVERE INJURIES. WE HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE VAN AT HIGHWAY SPEED SINCE THAT DAY AND OBVIOUSLY CANNOT. WE RESEARCHED THE SOLUTIONS AND PATHS THAT 1,000'S OF OTHER OWNERS HAVE TAKEN FOLLOWING REPORTING LIFE THREATENING AND OTHER ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION SAFETY ISSUES. MOST OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED REPEAT FAILURES MAKING THIS VEHICLE UNSAFE AT HIGHWAY SPEED EVEN FOLLOWING CURRENT REPAIR SOLUTIONS. I PLEAD WITH YOU TO TAKE SWIFT ACTION SO THAT MY VOICE MAY SPEAK FOR THE DEAD AND INJURED THAT DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEIR ODYSSEY OR THE ODYSSEY IN FRONT OF THEM WENT OUT OF CONTROL. *TR
THE KEY FOR MY 2003 ODYSSEY CAN BE PULLED OUT IN ANY GEAR. IT HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN A SMALL COLLISION . WHEN THE CAR WAS PARKED ON A SMALL INCLINE, I FAILED TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK WHEN I PULLED OUT MY KEY. THE CAR SUBSEQUENTLY ROLLED DOWN THE INCLINE AND CRASHED INTO A PARKED CAR. THE HONDA DEALER INDICATED THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS WORN. IN THE MEANTIME, I NOW JUST TRY TO ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SET THE PARKING BRAKE AND DOUBLE CHECK WHEN I PARK THAT THE CAR IS ACTUALLY IN PARK BEFORE I PULL THE KEY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEED WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER ASSISTED WITH PARTIAL REPAIR COSTS. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V176000 (POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) AND BELIEVED THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE RECALL REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,700 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

03 HONDA ODYSSEY WHILE TRAVELING AT 50 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION WENT INTO LOWER GEAR AND BACK. THEN CONTINUED TO DROP DOWN A GEAR OR 2 AND GO BACK UP. I STOPPED THE CAR AND STARTED UP AGAIN, IT CONTINUED, THEN THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT. I WAS ABOUT 5 MILES FROM A HONDA DEALER AND DECIDED I BETTER DRIVE THERE. ON THE WAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON PLUS ALL THE OTHER LIGHTS, IT WOULDN'T SHIFT AND I COULDN'T GO OVER 20 MPH. I WAS ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY TO GET TO THE HONDA DEALER. MY CHILDREN WERE TERRIFIED AND UPSET. THE TRANSMISSION WAS ORIGINALLY RECALLED, I HAD THE RECALL FIX AND IT STILL FAILED. I FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THIS TRANSMISSION AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS TO PREVENT ANY DEATHS. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING DURING RUSH HOUR ON A MAJOR ROAD WHOEVER WAS BEHIND ME WOULD HAVE SLAMMED INTO ME. *TR

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT WHEN SHIFTING INTO REVERSE, THERE WAS A LENGTHY DELAY BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD REGISTER AND ENGAGE IN REVERSE. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 108,000.
I HAVE OWNED MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY FOR 4 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM TILL NOW. I HAD JUST GOTTEN OFF THE INTERSTATE AND SUDDENLY MY VAN ACTED LIKE I HAD SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND JERKED ME REALLY HARD. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME OR COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS WRECK. MY TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD IT TOWED TO HONDA DEALERSHIP. EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A HIGHLY KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP HONDA WOULD DO NOTHING TO HELP WITH THE $3300 I HAD TO PAY FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. I WAS 8 MONTHS PREGNANT AT THE TIME AND JUST SO THANKFUL THAT IT DIDN'T CAUSE A SERIOUS WRECK LIKE IT COULD HAVE. HONDA SHOULD HAVE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS REALLY HURT OR LOOSES A LIFE!! *TR
