THERE IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH MY SONATA'S STEERING. I HAVE READ A TON OF COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME PART FAILURE, BUT AM UNABLE TO LOCATE A RECALL FOR THE RUBBER COUPLER THAT CONNECTS THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING TO THE ACTUAL STEERING COLUMN. I STARTED HEARING A CLICKING NOISE IN MY STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE WHEEL WAS TURNED IN EITHER DIRECTION FROM CENTER. IT DID NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF THE CAR WAS MOVING OR AT STOP. THE NOISE CONTINUED GETTING WORSE OVER A 3 MONTH TIME FRAME AND IS NOW MORE OF A THUD NOISE. THE NOISE ITSELF IS NOT THE SAFETY PROBLEM, ONLY A SIDE EFFECT. THE SAFETY ISSUE IS THAT THE SAME PART THAT IS FAILING CAUSING THE NOISE HAS NOW STARTED TO CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE BACK AND FORTH ANYTIME THE CAR GOES FASTER THAN 55-60MPH. HOW CAN SOMEONE MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS SHAKING SO BADLY, AND HOW EXACTLY IS THIS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE? IT IS SCARY TO DRIVE TO SAY THE LEAST, BUT I HAVE TO DRIVE 80 MILES ROUND TRIP DAILY FOR WORK. MY ARMS ARE ALMOST NUMB BY THE TIME I MAKE IT TO WORK OR BACK HOME FROM BEING SHAKING ALMOST THE ENTIRE WAY. IT IS NOT LIKE I CAN DRIVE THE CAR SLOW ENOUGH ON THE FREEWAYS HERE IN THE DFW AREA, THAT WOULD BE A HOLE OTHER SAFETY TOPIC. I GUESS I'M GOING TO HAVE TO FORK OUT THE $3-400 TO FIX IT. WHY CAN'T NHTSA JUST ADD THIS PART TO THE EPS RECALL #143 THAT COVERS THE EPS CONTROL UNIT? IF THE DEALER HAS TO TAKE IT A PART TO REPLACE THE EPS CONTROL UNIT, WHY WOULD THEY NOT INSTALL A NEW COUPLER? ITS, FUNNY THOUGH, YOU KNOW HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE, THEY CHANGED THE DESIGN OF THE COUPLER FROM A RUBBER ONE TO A METAL ONE ON THE NEWER MODELS, BUT HAVE YET TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THEIR POOR DESIGN OR EARLIER MODEL YEARS. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS FOR ADDITIONAL ITEMS ON THIS CAR THAT WERE NOT AS SEVERE AS THIS ISSUE IS, SO I'M HOPPING NHTSA ISSUE THE RECALL.

WHEN STOPPED, TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT PRODUCES A THUMPING SOUND/FEEL IN THE STEERING WHEEL. STEERING WHEEL ALSO VIBRATES AT HIGHER SPEEDS, AROUND 70 MPH. DEALER DIAGNOSED THIS PROBLEM AS A FAILURE IN THE STEERING COLUMN, W/SMART KEY - 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA [563103Q400] . DEALER QUOTED $1300 TO REPAIR. I AM CURRENTLY ASKING THE DEALER TO REEVALUATE THE CONDITION TO SEE IF THIS IS REALLY A PROBLEM WITH JUST THE STEERING COUPLING, SONATA - 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA [564003Q000]. SO FAR NO REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE.

I PURCHASED A PRE-OWNED 2011 SONATA IN OCT 2013. IN SEPTEMBER OF 2016 THE STEERING WHEEL AT TIMES WOULD BE HARD TO STEER. THEN AROUND OCTOBER OF 2016 MY STEERING WHEEL STARTED MAKING A CLICKING SOUND WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL AND THE ESC LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED EVEN WHEN I DEPRESSED THE BUTTON NUMEROUS TIMES . WHEN I WENT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE STEERING COLUMN AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO TAKE IT TO HYUNDAI TO FIX IT BECAUSE THE STEERING WOULD HAVE TO BE REPROGRAMMED. I CALLED AND WAS SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I HAD TO SHELL OUT $1100 JUST TO HAVE IT REPAIRED.

TURNING STEERING WHEEL A FEW DEGREES LEFT OR RIGHT OF CENTER PRODUCED A KNOCKING, CLICKING AND SOME PLAY. ALSO, STEERING WOULD RATTLE LOUDLY WHEN DRIVING OVER ROUGH SURFACE SUCH AS GRAVEL DRIVEWAY. DEALER REPAIR DETERMINED IT WAS THE STEERING COUPLER ALLOWING BOTH SHAFTS TO BECOME LOOSE. HAD THIS REPAIRED AND SERVICE DEPT. MANAGER TOLD ME I SHOUD NOW HAVE A SAFE CAR? 8 MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY, MILEAGE OF 41,740. I FEEL LOSE OF STEERING CONTROL IS A SAFETY HAZARD.

TOOK MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA IN TO THE DEALER FOR THE ENGINE SEIZING RECALL IN APRIL 2016 AND THEY RECOMMENDED I REPLACE MY STEERING COUPLER. I HAD NOT NOTICED ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT AT THAT TIME SO I DECIDED TO WAIT. I AM TAKING IT IN TODAY TO HAVE IT REPLACED BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL IS VERY LOOSE AND IS MAKING A CLICKING NOISE WHEN I TURN IT. THE CAR IS NOT IMMEDIATELY RESPONSIVE TO TURNING IN THE PAST FEW DAYS. I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE SAME MODEL YEAR CAR ON THE HYUNDAI FORUMS. I CHECKED MY VIN AND THERE IS NOT A RECALL FOR THIS. THERE SHOULD BE IF THE CAR CAN BECOME UNRESPONSIVE TO SOMEONE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL.

WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE'S SONATA, I FELT A DISTINCT "CLUNK" IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE MOVING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT. THIS OCCURS WHEN STOPPED AS WELL AS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. I AM CONFIDENT THAT THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT DESERVES AN IMMEDIATE SAFETY RECALL RESPONSE. IT IS ALSO MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS SPECIFIC STEERING COMPLAINT (COUPLER FAILURE) HAS BEEN REPORTED BY NUMEROUS SONATA OWNERS WITH NO REMEDY ISSUED BY NHTSA. WHY IS THAT? THE STEERING WHEEL FELT LOOSE ONE DAY AFTER COMING HOME FROM WORK. THEN MY WIFE USED THE CAR AND TOLD ME THAT SHE NOTICED THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WASN'T RESPONDING ON THE TURNS LIKE USUAL? SO WE HAD THE CAR LIKE THIS FOR A FEW MONTHS BUT GOT USED TO THIS PROBLEM AND THOUGHT IT WAS JUST WEAR AND TEAR. WELL ONE DAY I HAD TO AVOID ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT WAS CREEPING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY AND COULDN'T SEE ME, AND WHEN I MADE THAT SUDDEN QUICK HALF TURN TO THE LEFT THE CAR KEPT ON DRIVING STRAIGHT SO I BRAKED HARD LOCKED UP THE WHEELS AND SKIDDED ABOUT 4 FEET OR SO! WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE SONATA IN TO GET IT CHECKED AND WE WERE THEN TOLD THAT WE WERE PRETTY LUCKY BECAUSE THE STEERING COLUMN WAS NOT HELD ON BY THE STEERING FLEX COUPLER, HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS BEING TOLD. BUT LATER I WAS TOLD BY A FLEET MEMBER THERE THAT I WAS PRETTY LUCKY TO NEVER HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR WHILE MAKING A TURN OR BRAKING HARD... WOW! I JUST STARTED WONDERING HOW MANY SONATAS HAVE BEEN IN ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF SOMETHING RELATED TO THIS? I JUST FEEL THAT THIS PART WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEVER SHOULD OF HAD ANY PROBLEM WITH MY STEERING COLUMN. $474.96 COST FOR THIS REPAIR. *TR

WHEN YOU TURN THE STEERING WHEEL THERE IS MOVEMENT BEFORE THE ACTUAL WHEEL ASSEMBLY IS ENGAGED. I AM CONCERNED THAT IT MAY GET WORSE OR EVEN FAIL. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE RECALLS FOR THIS MODEL CAR MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED AT THIS TIME.
